I am flying across the US next week, and it has been reccommended that i use a tranquilizer to calm my nerves. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best one? Ideally, I would like that the drug is effective for conquering in-flight panic, but won't make me groggy long after the effects have worn off. I would like to attend a social gathering shortly after landing, so i am trying to find a drug that will keep me calm while flying but able to be feeling energetic and able to drink upon my arrival (8 hours after departure from East coast) Please only answer if you have experience, and not just an idea about what would be best. I would really appreciate it!

I have been prescribed lorazepam, but have not taken it yet- anyone know about this drug and if it will be suitable?

Xanax!

You can start off with a little bit of it, and if it is not enough, you can put some more under your tongue to dissolve (tastes yukky though) and it will kick in fast--in about 15 minutes. It has a short half-life, so it will be out of your system pretty fast. It can have a "happy" effect, and you should be able to have a drink or two when you land, but your alcohol tolerance will be affected. I would think that would be the case with any of the benzos. Valium has a longer half-life, so if you want to drink, go with the Xanax.

What ever you get make sure you ask for a tester , I took some pills and was very ill and they wouldn't let me travel so I missed the my holiday a few years ago. The best thing to take with you is some confidence, I later that year went and had flying lessons and actually flew the plane. It really gives you what you really need which is an understanding of what is happening around you and that in turn lifts your confidence which is better than any pill. I still dint like flying I probably never will but I have flown a few times since without any problems.

Lorezepam is just another name for Valium. It'll just make you relaxed and take the edge off. I hate flying too.
But it's supposed to be the safest way to travel...but tell that to the families of 9-11 and they'll probably kill you on the spot.

Personally, it's not the flying itself that bothers me. It's being trapped in a flying tube, 30 thousand feet in the air with no way of getting out that makes me a little nervous. I don't fly anymore...they don't make medication strong enough to get me on a plane again. If I can't drive there myself, I won't go. Screw it.

It really all depends on the extent of your fear of flying. Myself, I take klonopin becuase the effects are long lasting and get me through the entire trip, from the car ride to the airport to arrival at the hotel. I've found that Xanax is faster acting and doens't affect me for as long, so you might want to consider that. I don't drink, so I don't know about the contra-indications regarding alcohol. Sorry.

lorazepam is a good drug for your fear of flying. It wont leave you too groggy/ sleepy afterwards...........just dont take too much. I always have an alcoholic drink before and while Im flying, and it seems to do the trick just fine. If you don't drink than lorazepam is probably a good choice.
