There are several Scriptures that come to mind that might help you in answering your question, but I'll stick to one or two for brevity's sake. One says, "Study to show thyself approved unto God; a workman needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Which means (in my humble opinion) that we are to spend as much time studying God's word for our own personal understanding. Another says, "try the spirits and see whether they be of God." This means that we should ask questions as often as possible of our religious leaders and see if we can back up their responses satisfactorily in the Word of God. All of the suggestions you made are good ones...Preachers, Q & A, and Parents are the best ones! Good luck to you!

It all depends on how much you feel like doing....for the 'average' christian simply reading the bible will be enough. Then there are the bible studies done by churches.....
You can always go to college and take courses specific in scripture studies. At the Bachelor's and Master's level you will find that the proffs have you read TONS of material on ONE VERSE of scripture to find out as much as possible on all kinds of things from socio-economic issues, agricultural background, when it was written, why it was written etc.
So...........in short, it all depends on the individual. How much do you really want to know. How much does it matter to you that one translation calls a garment red and another scarlett? For some these are big issues---for others it does not matter that much. That is the beauty of vocation by the way, St. Paul talks about it when he uses the metaphor of the body---we are not all called with the same gifts.

Its difficult to know who you can trust. All religion is man made, it all makes the same claim that it comes from God. This claim is partially true but people can never stand to leave Gods word alone. This is because god’s word is consistent and does not mesh well with their personal preconceptions and bigoted ideas. So they make little changes here and there injecting their thoughts into the mix tainting the word with nonsense. For this reason you should not put much faith in these ideas about god that come from others. If God wants to tell you something He is perfectly capable of telling you directly.
Maybe you should stop reading what other people say about God and ask him to tell you what he wants you to do directly. Stop reading; clear you mind and listen. When you pray get you’re talking over as soon as possible and listen. He is trying to talk to you but your mind is full of nonsense from the bible and other sources. Don’t be surprised if what you hear does not sound much like what you have been told about God. You will be hearing Gods message minus the nonsense.
In your bible study have you ever heard of the small still voice? You can't hear it if your mind is otherwise occupied with other people’s silly ideas about God. Just try it you will be surprised

Never use one of the slang or Good News Bibles and avoid the King James as it is one of the worst translations ever. Use the New American or the New Jerusalem.. And use The Jerome Bible Commentary.

Christ told the apostles that he would send his Spirit to guide them and their successors into ALL TRUTH. He also told them anything they bind on earth would be bound in heaven, a juridical term of the time which meant they had the power (Authority) to make and enforce the rules.
Go to the successors of the apostles.

Jesus established the Catholic Church in Matthew 16 with HIs full authority to carry out His mission on earth.
"Receive the Holy Spirit," He said to the Church's first earthly leaders, the apostles. "What you bind on earth is bound in heaven; what you loose on earth is loosed in heaven."
Jesus commissioned this Church to (among other things) interpret Scripture, particuarly those parts of it that at first look are less than clear.
He also granted the Church the authority, in His name, to render teachings on moral issues in light of the Gospels and other sections of Scripture.
That's why the Church has clear and binding moral teachings on issues such as birth control, which are not mentioned explicitly in the Bible.

You take the words from those you trust the most and cross reference them yourself to prove/disprove to yourself the truth of it all.
:)
Julia, is that why some choirboys get abused too? Due to those "clear and binding moral teachings"?
