Both of the above answers are correct, but only if you place no value on your time. Doing your own genealogy takes a lot of time and effort. You can go to your local library and see if they have a genealogy room. A lot do, but you may need to go to the main library in your city or county. Another good place is a local historical society, from the geographic area where your family is from. [wow that was an awkward sentence].
Theres only so much you can do on your own, or without incurring expenses. If you insist on spending NO money, keep in mind you will get what you paid for. Heres an example: There's a guy on Ebay that sells census records by county and year. Theyre not super expensive, only about $10 or so. Now go to the Church of Latter Day Saints website to look up sentence records online. Your eyes will glaze over almost instantly as you try to decipher 100+ year old, photocopied chickenscratch. Oh yeah, and if your great grandfather's name or birthplace is spelled correctly, you'll be the first person that's happened to.
I believe your question has already been answered, but to try to do this for free? Not usually posssible.

There is a gym on the third floor of an office building in San Francisco. You get to it by climbing three flights of stairs. There is a sign above the entrance to the stairway on the ground floor:
"Your work out begins here!"
There are dozens of links to huge, free genealogy sites in the answers to resolved questions here. Someone asks your question just about every day.
Genealogy takes research. I would suggest that you begin your research here, just as I used to climb those three flights of stairs to the gym. Use the search function or just browse the resolved questions.

rootsweb.com, census-online, alhn.com, (american local history network) your local library and history center, people sometimes publish their family genealogy online, look in family bibles, listen to family stories, go to google.com and type in the name of the person with "quotes" around it. Come to this site and ask questions people are generous and want to help. I can help some. I can give you a start. Who knows I may even have what you are looking for, I've traced a lot of family tree's and I've done a lot of work on my own family. good luck !

RootsWeb.com is very good, and then there's FamilySearch.org, but it has a lot of mistakes and inconsistencies in it.
