What makes it such a social problem for such a superficial feature..Hair is after all dead tissue once it leaves the root of the scalp.

That's a good question I wish there were more women out there who would be bold enough to go bald

Simply put, it's unattractive. A person with no hair or a balding head is evolutionarily considered unattractive because it would usually indicate an older, aging person or someone who is sick and unhealthy. I think we are born with this instinct and it is hard to ignore. However, considering that we are no longer cavemen and we know better than to assume that all bald people are old or sick, hairless people are no longer sentenced to a life of solitude.

Still, it is only natural for us to like something as stupid as dead tissue coming out of our scalp. Socially, we've made it taboo for women, b/c some would say it is what makes us feminine. The funny thing is that while we hold women to a high standard, men get to run around being hairy in the weirdest places, sweating, stinking, and bossing us around and yet we still love them.

I think that if all women decided to shave their head in protest, then men would have no choice but to give in to their new shiny head women. But instead, all it takes is one woman to not comply and keep her beautiful, long, shiny locks and all the men will flock to her.

In answer to your double standard question: Yes, it is. But, it is a standard women apply to themselves. Long hair is a secondary sexual characteristic. It is part of being female.

But, look, most people are vain about their appearance, at least to some degree. Loss of hair may connote the onset of age or illness. The current fashion for men's shaven heads is a relatively recent fad. ( I hope it lasts)

I, for one, agree with you. A shaven head on a beautiful woman can be very sexy. It itself it is not unnatractive. I have seen women, undergoing chemotherapy, of all shapes, sizes and ages. It only takes a few moment for the adjustment to take place. Hair very quickly becomes a non-issue.

Yes it is a double standard. According to a recent survey most(american) men prefer a woman's hair to long and straight. We are a society based on the physical(sadly). Bald is seen as somewhat of a masculine characteristic, not many women walk around completely bald. India Irie recently went bald and looks great, not to mention Melissa Ethridge. But I feel one should do their hair as they wish, not as society demands.

There is something unselltling about a bald head. What if the woman is undergoing chemotherapy? Do you really want everyone gawking and gaping?

If the woman is comfortable with it, it makes no nevermind to me.

I've been bald (chemo) and I have a rather lovely head, thanks, but in the winter, even with a hat... brrrrr. *L* I have to say, it was very liberating not to have to shampoo, condition, blow dry, comb, curl, brush, color, perm or ANYTHING for six months.
