Truth of every kind makes free, while lies bind up in bonds. Ignorance also binds up, because it gives ground to Satan. Man's ignorance is a primary and essential condition for deception by evil spirits. The ignorance of the people of God concerning the powers of darkness, has made it easy for the devil to carry out his work as deceiver. Unfallen man in his pure state was not perfect in knowledge. Eve was ignorant of "good and evil," and her ignorance was a condition which lent itself to the deception of the serpent.
The devil's great purpose, and for which he fights, is to keep the world in ignorance of himself, his ways, and his colleagues, and the Church is taking sides with him when siding with ignorance about him. Every man should keep an attitude of openness to all truth, and shun the false knowledge which has slain its tens of thousands, and kept the nations in the deception of the devil.

Hassatan or Satan is the adversary. His true nature is as tempter of man. Ironically, nowhere in the Bible does the Devil do anything evil, he merely creates temptation. Now this is not to say he was right or wrong merely to point out that he himself committed no outright act of evil. In fact, he and God have even wagered on man and his strength of faith, for those who doubt, read the book of Job. Other than that, he has morphed into a manifestation of pure evil, but in truth he is merely the advocate to what God does not stand for.
Note, I have no affiliation with Satan nor do I care too, I merely offer the answer to the question asked.

Lucifer (which means "Son of the Morning") is the proper name for who many refer to as the devil. He existed before the world was as did we all. Elohim, God the Father, created all of us spiritually before we were created mortally. In the preexistence we were given our agency to chose between two plans of salvation. One plan, brought by Jesus Christ, was that a world would be created upon which we would be placed and taught about God and to be tested to see of we would obey all of God's Laws. Lucifer presented another plan. His was to bring us to earth, force us to follow the laws and ensure that all returned to heaven. Being that he could guarantee all of our return, he wanted to take God's place and his power. There was a "war" in heaven, and Lucifer, and those that chose to follow him, we are told it was one third of the host of heaven, were kicked out and forbidden the opportunity to receive a mortal body. They were placed upon this earth to tempt us not to follow the laws of God. The true nature of the devil is a spirit being who know who you are and where you came from. He does not want you to follow the laws of God and return to your Father in Heaven. He wants you to be cast off from the presence of the Lord and lost and miserable like he is.

to be as kind and tempting as possible, I suppose. Of course I don't believe in the devil or in any being with powers greater than my own.

Satan is the antithesis of God.
God is love and joy, Satan is hatred and pain.
St Michael cast Satan in to Hell because Satan, one of God's favorite angels, wanted to set himself up above God. Thus, Satan lost his place in Heaven and was cast into Hell where there is no presence of God, no love, no happiness.
Satan still tries to put himself above God, but he is always unsuccessful. However, through his lies and other deceits, he gathers followers along his way.
Because he is the weak one, Satan will never have as many followers as God, never has a many souls in Hell with him as God will have in Heaven.
In the end, God is the victor, Satan is the defeated.

We shall be free; th’ Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reigh secure; and, in my choice,
To reign is worth ambition, though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.

To convince millions to follow his religion he craftily called christianity-it was the only way he could think of to be able to get them to *willingly* give over their souls to him...
