The pads act as shock absorbers when they land. In animals like polar bears the pads are covered with a thick layer of fur so you can't see them. But cats originate from hot countries, so they have bald pads. The design is like the soles of your feet, check the ball of your foot and heel, the areas that take the most impact when you walk.
