Most of the time when you bring a subject to kids, it's either boring or unknown...(talking with experiences)
So, simply ask theme what they would like to talk about, keeping it under control, then make a list, use a couple of subject and keep the rest of the list for future sessions.
Teens love being involved in group decisions, and, on top of that, it's a good warm-up for you, and the kids, if they don't know you... Just avoid the inappropriate propositions and you should be fine !
And, plz, try to avoid "grown-ups" subjects, like war, adults problems, politics, etc, etc, ...
They have time before they start worrying about those things...
Good luck !

You might open a discussion on what it takes to be ready for marriage. It is not too early to start.
You could begin with the purpose of dating/courtship. Let them express themselves on this. Make a chart as they go, one side for what 'really' happens, the other side for 'ideals' as would be seen by a Christian. List each response under one heading or the other. Then all take a look at it. How can they change what 'really' happens into what Jesus would 'want' to happen to them as they prepare to find a Christian marriage partner?
You could also bring in what behaviours on the list would bring actual happiness into their lives, what behaviours would bring sadness. Compare the sides. I truly believe that the side showing what Jesus would want will have the most listings that will bring happiness.
With divorce at the rate it is, it is time for young people to think of what they really want and how to discern activities that will bring it to them.
Good luck! I am sure you will be smashing, no matter what you present!

Do some Bible research on the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-12) and teach them what each part means.
For example:
** "Our Father in Heaven" - Who do we pray to? Only to the Father. Not to the Son (Jesus), and not to the so-called saints.
** "Hallowed be thy name" - What is the Father's name? It's not titles such as LORD or GOD, but Jehovah. See Psalm 83:18
** "Thy Kingdom come" - What is the Kingdom? It's a real government ruled by a righteous King (Jesus) and his 144.000 co-rulers. See Isaiah 9:6,7; Daniel 2:44; Revelation 5:9,10; and Revelation 14:1,3.
** "Thy will be done ON EARTH as it is in heaven" - What is Jehovah God's will for the earth? When and how will this come about? See http://www.watchtower.org/library/w/2004/10/1/article_02.htm and http://www.watchtower.org/library/t15/peaceful.htm .

Try teaching them about how to be "Fishers of Men" I think its from the Gospel of Mark. I enjoyed that teaching at a youth retreat several years back. The fish pond is much bigger now.....

I just started teaching a youth group, too...
If they're immature, discuss fairness or what being "cool" can mean to their Christian beliefs.
If they're more mature, discuss the evils of materialism.

It depends entirely on the age of your youth group.

Pick up a biology book and make them the first generation that understands what evolution is. At least teach them the meaning of "scientific theory."

How to brush your teeth regularly. A fresh breath and a bright smile leaves a lasting positive impression that is hard to forget.
For that matter, so does yellow cornish smile with a stinky smelly dogbreath.
