Depending on how old they are they can, but the worst part about playing old golf balls is that you don't get the up to date technology they come out with each year.

no the age of the golf ball does not affect play. if your ball is cracked or waterlogged do not play with it.

they will NOT go bad over time if they are kept in reasonable temps (32-110) and out of the sun. They WILL lose compression over time with constant play of the same ball.

Too much heat breaks them down. Keep them in a cool place if you plan to store them over the winter.
