you can get a really good bottle of scotch whisky for that amount of money. if he doesn't like whisky there are other fine liquors that he probably does appreciate. Really good tequila can get kinda pricey, and so can other whiskeys like bourban or Irish whisky. unless he's fairly wealthy he probably won't generally spend his own money on such an extravagant thing. but he will be proud and happy to have a nice bottle to share with a friend sometime, or to be able to offer a glass of really good stuff to his boss when he comes over, or just a change for the better in what he would usually pour into his glass.
Good luck!!

In my experience, older men tend to be "tinkerers". They all seem to have a workshop of some sort where the fiddle around with whatever strikes their fancy. Why not get him a gift card to Home Depot or Lowes so he add to the tools or supplies he needs to tinker?

Buy him a bottle of wine and gift certificate to his favorite restaurant, perhaps a place like Ruth Chris or Morton's steak houses.

My dad loves tools but I don't know anything about what to buy. I've given him a gift card to Lowe's and Home Depot several times.

What are his interests? I mean, it's hard to say if we don't know what he likes. Buy him a bottle of the "good stuff" and take him out to dinner and get him a new cell phone. How is that for generic?
