Nobody NEEDS a dog unless they have a physical disability that requires an assistance animal.

If the other people in your house don't want a dog, don't get one. We have a dog that we rescued from the pound because the kids in a family begged and begged their parents for a dog. In the end, the parents didn't really like having a dog--dogs are a lot of work that everyone in the family has to take responsibility for, and the parents never really wanted the thing anyway. So, the parents gave the dog to the pound, where he sat on Death Row until we rescued him, one day before he was scheduled to be put down.

Wait until you are on your own, have a good source of income, a nice place to live and a stable life. Then get a dog. You'll be so glad that you waited. I didn't get my first dog until I was 26 and married.

Kids always claim they'll take care of it but when you're at school, who cares for the dog? When you go to a sleepover at someone else's house, who cares for the dog? When it's 3 AM and the dog is sick, who takes the dog to the emergency vet? And when the dog has an accident, he's just as likely to have it on you parents' bed as yours. He's also just as likely to chew up your mom's favorite pair of shoes as he is yours.

Are you prepared to take on the FULL responsibility of caring for a dog? I have six of my own and I"m a grown woman! It's not easy but it CAN be very rewarding. If you don't have a fenced in yard, are you willing to walk it on a lead EVERY DAY in the rain, shine, snow, sleet? Opening your door and letting the dog run free can result in his death if hit by a car. What about feeding it? What if you get a puppy? Are you going to get up in the night and let it out when it whines to go potty? Even if it means you have to walk him on a leash? It's a BIG responsibility to care for an animal. Like a child in many, many ways. And then there are vet bills? Just because you get a young dog doesn't mean health issues can't arise. There are yearly shots that MUST be kept up to date. There is A LOT of responsibility in caring for a dog. Think about it long and hard, first.

***I have to agree with bazzmc as well. You need to prove yourself to your parents first. I think the goldfish idea is great. May sound corny but try it. Heck even a hamster would be a way to prove you CAN take care of an animal! Good luck!

Nobody really needs a dog unless you are a blind person. If you really want one, you can convince them by showing them that you are a responsible person. Take on some daily chores and prove to them that you can do them. Most of the time when kids get pets, they feed them and take care of them for the first few months. After a while, the parents end up taking care of the pets themselves because they are usually neglected by the real owners.

You can convince them by being 100% responsible in EVERY other area of your life, like getting your homework done, getting your chores done without being asked, keeping your room clean, etc. If they see that you are very responsible and trustworthy, then you might be able to convince them that you can handle the added responsibility of caring for a pet.

Also, you could start out small, like with a goldfish. Show that you can take care of THAT, and then they might let you move up to something bigger.

Start being more responsible, do things, without needing to be told. Maybe even start walking the neighbors dogs, to prove you can take care of a dog.

the best thing to do is to show your parents that you are prepared to take the responsibility. find a dog breed that suits your home and your family. tell them reasonable facts of why you need a dog such as: it would help me to become a more responsible person. more important tell them that you will take the entire responsibility . the main word here is responsibility because it is what a dog means.

Show some real responsibility. Get a job. Volunteer to help the elderly. Clean the house without being asked.

Well it took me 11 years, but now I have a sweet little Schnorkie we got at the flea market. Just keep on trying and show them you're responsible and can show a puppy love and care. It worked for me :)
