From the three major credit bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, the range of credit scores is from 300-850. As a mortgage consultant I work with credit reports every day.
The previous answer listing www.myfico.com is a great source, as well as www.transunion.com, www.experian.com and www.equifax.com.
If you would like info from the government concerning credit, you should visit www.ftc.gov/credit.

Yuck!!!!!! 600 for a Credit score is NOT average!!!! 650 maybe.. but with 600 approvals for credit will be far and few between. I would shoot for 675-700.
