if the baby is covered under insurance for the 30 days do you have to put them under your policy so they can have medical coverage?

As soon as you get home from the hospital you should get your baby added. They are covered for the first 30 days if you add them within the thirty days. But the reason I say to do it asap is because when you do it right away everything goes much smoother when you get bills and stuff. Also I waited three weeks and I ended up having to get a prescription for the baby at the two week check up and she was not showing on the policy yet at the pharmacy so I had to pay for it.

Generally they are automatically covered until you get them enrolled, but you do have to enroll them as soon a possible. You just have to get a copy of the birth certificate to the insurance and get them on your policy within a certain number of days - usually 30 like you said. The insurance won't automatically say, "Oh, you had another kid. He's covered." You have to tell them to cover them, but they give you a grace period to get the info to them.

It was under my insurance plan. I guess if you want to be totally sure though, you need to call the 800 number on the back of your insurance card. I bet it probably is.

Same with Blue Cross Premera. The hospital had to retroactively bill insurance after we registered our baby with Premera.

Where I work, they are covered automatically. You just have to give the insurance company their name and social security number.
