The parents are much less likely to pay for it these days as the average price of a wedding is over $25,000. When I realized my parents couldn't afford to pay for my entire wedding, I set aside a savings account that everyone contributes to. That way no one feels they paid for one particular thing (control issues are laid to rest) and everyone is able to contribute. We set up a budget for what everyone thinks they will be able to give and when they think they will be able to give it by. It has been a wonderful system.

1.) It depends on your budget. You can stretch your dollar to as extravagent or as simple as you want.
2.) Location, location, location.
3.) My sister had an extravagent wedding in the middle of PA and still paid 125 a head! But the food was AMAZING! I live in DC and I'm getting married in September. My dinner only costs $50 a head and it's at a restaurant.
4.) I'm too old for my parents to pay for the wedding. I'm 29. My fiance is 33. We've been working for a while... So we are planning on paying for most of it ourselves. My parents have generously offered to pay for some of the reception. Anyone can pay for the wedding. You could even get sponsors for the wedding...

It all depends on what you are looking to spend. I got married this past January, and we had a simple wedding out in Las Vegas. We made our own invites (i do a lot of crafting, etc..), made our souveniers, my girlfriend made our centerpieces, and I purchased things when they were on sale.
We sent out invites one year prior to see how many people would attend, and although we had a large number of people (45-50) we still spent less than what we would have spent in NYC (where we live). Although it was in the (very low) thousands , it can be done cheaper out there.
It is not customary anymore for the parents to pay. We paid for our own wedding, while my mom helped us a great deal with everything else (photographer, my gown, accessories, etc.)

We just got married, my parents paid and it cost around $6,000...there were 100 guests, buffet dinner.....it was pretty basic.
Yes, it is still customary for the girls parents to pay, however, it's not practiced as much as it used to be. So ask your parents if they plan to do that. If they don't, you and your fiancee can save to pay for it, you can elope, you can take out a loan, etc.

if you want to save money on the location cost, try the nearesst beach or park. most of the time there is a small fee if you have over a certian # of guest, but nothing like you would pay for renting a hall or something. also- don't have the reception catered. have a few friends and family designated to make the reception food. (except the cake! buy it!) My friend just got married and she used artificial flowers instead of real ones. it saved her a lot of money and she got to pick out exactly what she wanted...not having to worry about what kind of flower is in season. i have a few other ideas to save money and have a beautiful wedding if you want to email me i will be glad to share them with you. Well, I got married for a little over $3,000.00 and yes my wedding was very very nice. The girl's parent's don't have to pay for it, the only thing my mother paid for was my wedding dress and my sister's maid of honor dress. I paid for everything else. Find a wedding consultant. Mine cost $1,200.00, but she did the flowers, the food, everything. That was a simple wedding and cheap in today's standards.

average wedding cost is 100% dependant on the location, I don't think there is an average. For our wedding, all of our parents chipped in, mine and both of his. It's the 21st Century now people, having the bride's family pay for it is too old-fashioned
