Engage your imagination, swallow your pride, and do everything you want to do as cheaply as possible!

All you really need to get married are a fiance(e), a clergyperson or judge, and a license! All the rest is gravy.

Can't afford a four-digit wedding gown? Find a two- or three-digit gown at David's Bridal or at a thrift shop or an inexpensive department store. You can find some lovely peasant gowns online at Ebay/Holy Clothing, which you and your bridesmaids can wear:

In fact, you might pick up some inexpensive clothing or other items at Ebay!

Can't afford a big multitiered wedding cake? Have a friend make a white sheet cake and find an inexpensive bride-and-groom cake topper at a party planning store. Can't hire a violinist? Find a CD of your favorite violin tunes. Can't hire a hotel ballroom? What about a local church or lodge? You get my drift.

There are books about having inexpensive yet attractive weddings. Look here:

Use your imagination! What if you were planning a child's birthday party with a wedding theme? Would that cost $5,000?

Remember, the marriage is more important than the wedding!

What you must be kidding right? government grants, sorry hun not gonna happen. Try asking family and friends to help if that doesn't work move your wedding date so you have more time to pay for everything or get a loan from the bank and pay it back. I know how it is I can't afford a $5000 wedding mine is gonna be about half that with help from family and friends and I'm still giving myself a year so I can buy stuff as I go.

No, the government does not give grants for weddings. They like to use that money to send people to college and help the disadvantaged (among other things), but your wedding is not included in a list of federal grants to be handed out anytime soon. I didn't pay taxes for your centerpieces. You will need to talk to the bank about a signature loan. I hope you have good credit. Or a good credit card. Or good friends. Or good family.

Here is an option for you. I just watched something today on msn.com about sponsored wedding. Check it out, you may have to re-vamp your wedding, and finding sponsors will be tough, but see what you can do. Congratulations and good luck!

And to everyone who says you can do it for much less than $5000, the average wedding costs $29,000! $5000 is a bargain, LEAVE HER ALONE!

No! Like the government wants to help pay for a marriage, which gets them less money in the long-run and statistically is probable to fail. I mean, I wish you all the luck and hope it lasts forever, but let's get real. I'm getting married in 2 weeks and have spent only like $1000 and it's going to be awesome. You just have to look and look and look until you find stuff you want at cheaper prices. And cut some things out. I know it's your wedding, but it's one day. A few hours. Wouldn't you rather spend that money on your honeymoon? Or toward a new house? And by the way, etiquette says your parents are supposed to pick up the cost.

Get a second job or a seasonal job
Get a loan or max you credit cards....

if you don't want to do that then...

Plan a wedding that you can afford...

Cut corners. Use silk flowers instead of fresh, don't give party favors, get married at the JOP, skip the booze and just have tea or soda's for refreshments, get your cake baked at a supermarket, make your own invitations, don't rent a limo, use a freiond's or relative's car, make your own centerpieces, make a CD with good party songs and let cousin Nic be the designated DJ, etc...

Congrats and good luck...

Get people to help instead of hiring people. Arrange your own flowers. Have your family friends cook. Get Aunt Grace to co-ordinate for you. Find a student photographer and videographer (Some are ready to go pro, but you'll get them for practically nothing. My photographer was $500 for the entire weekend plus and album, all the pictures on CD and all the negatives. She now does wedding for $2000 just for the wedding itself)

People are willing to help people on a budget. Use your connections and even if things aren't EXACTLY how you imagined them, they will be beautiful. Mine was.

I answered this question in more detail a minute ago. Check out my answers.

If you can't afford it, then change it. Get married in Vegas. Do a small ceremony and have a casual party later. Change when & where you do it. I'd much rather go to wine tasting type thing with appetizers and less than 25 people than sit down with 100 and have bad food, have to pay for alcohol, and be in a bad location.

That's why you need to plan the wedding ahead of time,,with the budget being at the top of the list

Live within your means.
If your parents can't or won't help, or can't do that much, then downsize to whatever you can afford.
You can have a wonderful wedding for much less than $5,000.
Time to learn NOW how to live on what you have.
Congratulations and best of luck.
