It's appropriate to ask, especially if you're planning on meeting this person.
If it's just an online thing, and you're not meeting, I wouldn't expect the truth to begin with.

If you're asking this because your online boyfriend/girlfriend is upset about you trying to prove they're telling the truth, that should be a red flag.

I think it's fine if you get involved with someone online, but I think it's good to go in with the expectation that the entire thing could be a lie.

I have several guy friends who have spoken to girls online, seen extensive profiles (like myspace), talked on the phone, etc... and then met them, and the girl had lied about her pictures, etc.

So I dunno, to what you're asking - Yes.
But I would expect him to not be telling the truth.

Yes but there is no way to tell if he is telling you the TRUTH. Best way to find out is to talk to him on the phone or face to face so when you ask new questions he wont have time to think of a lie if its not true and you can easily tell if he is lying.
If you meet him make sure you take a friend for back up and meet in a very public area where he cant hurt you and dont trust him in any way not matter how much you want to!

I think instead of asking him to prove himself then just be cautious with your own self. Do things like don't meet in public the frist time. Online dating can be great many use it as a way to escape their realities. Just make sure his reality is a wife and three kids or a criminal record of some sort that you would have to fear such as rape or murder. I think that the easiest way if you must have him prove himself is something as simple as get to know his friends. Just be careful.

We'd all really like to believe the person we are coming to enjoy
knowing and speaking with is exactly as they say they are. We want nothing more than to take them at face value. What if you are left with questions that, in your mind, really don't make sense - but the person you are speaking with has a quick
explanation. Fancy footwork usually involves weaving a tale that on it's surface - sounds plausible, but little else, you can draw your own conclusions.if you want to base a relationship on dishonesty, and the person you are speaking with you have a clear idea as to their true appearnce - and their lying - why do you think they deserve to have any kind of relationship at all?

Depends on what you're being told and what you're asking someone to prove...in general, anyone online that's going to make a claim about something, should be prepared to back it up...it's far different from offline where these things could be more easily found out...

Well, it's not inappropriate, but it might be a little awkward--though they'll probably understand your doubts. I once dated a person from online who even mailed me current photographs, baby pictures, and clippings of articles they've written in the paper.

Please try and verify as much as you can about him. Even then he could be a psycho. Trust me. I now have a stalker and I thought he was a nice, very talented, very attractive man. You can never really know who you're talking to. Now I have a talented, attractive psycho who won't leave me alone!
