Get some new equipment.
If the machine is breaking down once a month, that's once a month too much. That can also mean that maybe you're getting false readings, which will put a patient's life in danger. I'd be suggesting new equipment.

You look at the cost of replacing it versus buying a new one versus the damage that can be done by a messed up machine. Sure, they are hella-expensive, but eventually they have to be replaced. You can promote it as updating your area, improving patient care, moving into the 21st century, yay!!!
If it is costing you monthly to fix the machine, that money could go to buying a new one. Plus, like someone else said, you can't risk such a sensitive and vital machine malfunctioning. Time to call in the big guns and get a new one. Of course, you could check out the warranty and see what the company will do to help you out. I don't know how long CT equip. usually lasts.
PS Cold, hard facts about the cost and risks (maybe even how much a lawsuit would cost the hospital) are the best way to get results. Do your homework, have the numbers ready. People want to see hard evidence. Plus, it gives the higher ups something to fall back on to justify the expense.

Breaking down once a month? What part of the machine is breaking down?
How about suggesting a tighter maintenance schedule to keep it up and running.
If it's the same thing every time then maybe only a sector of the machine needs rebuilt or replaced.

I would cover my butt by putting in writing my recommendation for replacement of the equipment and send a copy to the board of directors. Other than appropriating the funds myself, all I could do was inform and request a replacement.

I would calculate the annual cost to have it repaired versus the cost to buy a new one.. and check it against the amount of income generated. If it's not cost effective you may want to approach the board or whatever dept is in charge with a proposal for a new one. The only way you'll be able to justify the cost of a new one is have your ducks in a row in term of costs..
