Some people have luck with a rubberband around their wrist to keep their hands busy. Whenever you want a cigarette, tell yourself all those factoids about dying and think of how you will prolong your life. Eventually you will retrain your brain in the way you think about cigarettes. Replace that bad behavior with a good one - drink a bottle of water when you want a cigarette, use a morning urge to take a multi-vitamin, expend that nervous energy you build up fighting off the urge by exercising or cleaning. Reinforce your good behaviors, i.e. not smoking a cigarette. Be silly if it works, "Good girl, no cigarette! Yay!!!" Acknowledge to yourself you are doing a good job. Its all psychological.

Hope something in there helps. I didn't bother with most of the conventional tricks.

Download a picture of a lung with cancer and look at it every time you want to light up. Go to your local hospital and visit someone dying from smoking. I know that is extreme but it should work. Get rid of all your ash trays and put a piece of clothing in an airtight bag. Feel like lighting up? smell the article in the bag. That will remind you how you smell. Keep cut up carrots in your fridge to chew on to prevent weight-gain. If you are a drinker, you might want to stop until it's no longer a temptation. Good Luck!!!

When I quit 5 years ago, I chewed my way through about a dozen packs of bic pens. I also joined up with "Leave the Pack Behind" a student group that helps people quit. Talk to you healthcare provider to find out if there is a group similar inyour area, they were a great help to me.

Get a "buddy". Someone who you can call when you have a craving, someone who'll help walk you throught it. Also, buy lots of gum or carrot sticks. If you start eating because you need something to do, you want to eat things like celery, or carrot sticks. You won't gain too much weight that way.
