This is an interesting question, but one that fits in my pocket because I almost moved to the Philippians about a decade ago. I will tell you what I know from then...which will probably be good even today: First of all, you have about 7,000 islands to choose from in the Philippians...some of which still haven't been named. They use the "Peso" for currency there...but it's not the same kind of Peso that is used in Mexico. A decade ago, one U.S. "dollar" equaled 28 Peso's...so if you had $1,000.00 they would convert into $28,000.00 peso's in the Philippians. If you KNOW anyone in the Philippians, even by correspondence, that would make it very easy transition. You can get a 5-year visa to live in the Philippians, and even get it renewed at least once (to spend 10 years there)...but as far as becoming an actual "citizen", I don't believe it's truly possible...but things may have changed. It would also be helpful if you practiced using some simple words in Tagalog...one of the Philippians official languages...as is English. You shouldn't have too much trouble communicating with the filippino people. The average price for a "good" hotel, which includes running hot water and air-conditioning, will be between 8 and 10 pesos each night. You can rough-neck it in cheaper hotels that will cost you about 4.5 pesos a night. DON'T travel around after sundown by yourself unless you want to get beat on and robbed. It's advisible to keep most of your currency in the local bank. They have "jeepney's" their...taxis that were made out of WWII jeeps that were left behind after the war...which you can hire ALL DAY for about 100 pesos ($4.50). The people are friendly...or they are not. It all depends on where you allow yourself to go. But in most places they are very kind to Americans...but watch and keep eyes and ears open at all times for the con-artists...which are very good at what they do. I could type all day about the Philippians...but I hope this helps. Do alot of READING about the Philippians before you go...it will help you tremendously.

It is very easy for an American to be a resident of the Philippines. Just come to the Philippines, pay little fees for the visa as a resident alien and follow local laws. Your dollar now will be 52 pesos more or less depending upon the exchange rate. That's it, you are already a Philippine resident. Filipinos are hospitable and will cater to your needs.

Hey Larry, you are mistaken. There are no hotels for just 10 pesos in the Philippines! Maybe you mean US dollars?
