I have always picked my names normally on the cats personality.

My last black cat would hide alot and then jump at you so she got named " Boo ".

My current black cat is Zoey...just has a look of a Zoey.

My other cat, Siamese and Linx mix has such indian colors on her and she dances on her back legs playing with milk rings so I named her after the Cherokee Indian word for cat, " Wesa ".

Boo's mom I got when she was barely 2 weeks old as a saved stray. As I took her home she looked up and meowed and I said " awww what a Babe ", well it stuck, she was " Babe " for the next 16 years.

Since I had a Babe n Boo at the time, and Babe's litter I ran through the B names. Bonkers, Bleu, Babs, Buster, Bo...and of course Boo.

Just watch the cat, a word should come to you.

If it's a girl you can name her Black Betty, just a thought. I think looking at the cats face will help you determine a good name for it. Yeah, I know what you mean about the usual names. When I was little, we had a black cat named Shadow.

How about Ouija? Like the game?

Typically, when I have a pet, it tends to name itself. Hang out with the cat for a while, and you'll find yourself calling it something, be it something mundane like 'Midnight' or 'Sweetie' or something more arcane. Heck, once, my family had a female cat we started calling Vader because A) when she was born her head looked a lot like Darth Vader's mask and B) she turned evil (yes, cats can be evil...this one started pulling trash out of the kitchen garbage and spreading it around the only carpeted areas in the house, which were on the *other* side of the house...and she chased our other cat in front of a car which was the end of him - we miss you Spot!!)

Good. You gave us the color and some idea, but it would be better if you mentioned the sex. Ok. Here are some male names:
Hunter, Attila, Romulus, Mr. Bean, Sir Richard Burton, Mickey, Barnaby, Spock, Ice T, Carlos, Sultan
Female names: Zelda, Chantal, Clarisse, Marguarita, Bella, Jillian, Liana, Georgina, Circe

Name is something that has to do with the opposite of black, like Flour (flower). Or, Whitey.

If I had a black cat, I'd name it Elphaba. It's from the play Wicked about the Wicked witch of the West and her name is Elphaba.

Watch it's personality. Keep calling it kitty until the perfect name comes to you. All in all, if you watch your cat, you will learn more about it's likes and dislikes, and you and your cat will become closer. For instance, if you're cat is typically meowing a lot, you could name it Meowzy, Yowler, Baby, (any singer or comedian)... It all depends on its personality. If all else fails, call it Mr or Ms Kitty.

I like people names. Our cat is Suzy, she came with it as we adopted her. But if we ever got a dog we'd call him Dennis, another cat, Bob...etc. It might depend on it's nature. Our cat is quite chubby but a big cat anyways so usually she answers to Fat Stuff or The Gray mass or Fat Be A tch. Whatever comes up, you know? Sometimes it just happens.

Jim, Greg, Annie, Frank, Joey, Charlie....you get the idea.

We chose "Blinky" for our black cat since you can't see her on the black chair if she closes her eyes.

Bagheera is how you spell the panther from The Jungle Book. This is our black dog's name.
