This clearly shows the love and forgiveness of god.
Here read for yourself the kindness and love of this magic sky-pixie;
Isaiah 13:15-18
"Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children."
The love, the tenderness, it really brings a tear to your eye doesn't it?

Woah, there sure are a lot of apoligistic morons out here tonight.
The FACT is kiddies, you CANNOT deflect this passage with ANY other passage. So John 3:16 does NOT undue the inherent evil in the passage I posted. Plus, I can post DOZENS of passages just as, or even more evil than that one.
But you idiots will just say stuff like "duh well that was the old testament" as if it means sweet F. A. which, by the way, it doesn't.

I'm sure you will get some b.s. about context.
I don't think you can find any context which justifies smashing babies against rocks.
To Mox Nix:
Researching is what allows others to gain knowledge. It is because of Yoda's research that he came to the correct conclusion that christianity is bullshit. Maybe you should put down your bible for a second and try reading someone else beliefs. Or, god forbid, a science journal.

Why not pick out John 3:16? That would be the answer to your question, if you were serious in asking it. There are other verses in the bible that show the kindness and mercy of God.
Also, there are more gruesome passages in the bible. Before you criticize the bible, or God, why don't you give them the benefit of the doubt? I can understand someone's unblief, and sketicism, but don't make fun... and that is what you are doing.
I am not telling you what you should do, but if you are going to make a comment such as this one, please do some reference, and study. Either way, your heart is in the right place, try listening to it. Take care.

And this some call the Good Book.
If their scriptures are to be taken literally--as many insist that they must--Jews, Christians, and Muslims must have very peculiar ideas of what is just and moral.
Fortunately, most conveniently ignore the unconscionable parts and concentrate on the more positive bits.
I admire people of faith for the good works they do, but beware those who swallow their holy scriptures whole and count it a virtue that they follow every line blindly as a commandment from on high.

These are two pagan nations in the line of world empires mentioned in the book of Daniel. The Medes and Persians are the ones who conquered Babylon that ended up setting Israel free to return home to Jurusalem and rebuild it and God's temple so that pure worship could be re-established. God allowed this to happen in fulfilling prophecy concerning Israel who were taken into captivity by Babylon. God did not make this happen. It also fulfills prophecy recorded in Daniel about the procession of world empires leading to our day.

There is a marked difference between the Old Testament and the New. You know, you spend an awful lot of time researching and thinking about something you dint believe in. Dint you have any anti-Bush rhetoric to pander?

Pretty gruesome.
But in all fairness--what is the context? I mean, who is the attacker, the attacked, for what reason . . . I'm curious and I don't want to look it up 'cause I'm at work :)
