You have TMJ.
I had it too. My jaw wouldn't open all the way and would pop. One day I started laughing and it got stuck open. That's when I decided to go to the doctor. Long story short. years later i ended up having orthroscopic surgery on the joint and it's been great! That was 4 years ago and I have only recently had one little aggrivation with it for 1 or 2 days.
See an oral surgeon. Don't let them give you vallum or muscle relaxers. That was just one way he got me to keep coming back to him. THey may also tell you you'll grow out of it. Unless you're and adult already.
They may try you on a night guard at first which is fine. THis keeps you from grinding your teeth in your sleep.

^^Close, but no cigar. TMJ is the your jaw's movements.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Because the disorder transcends the boundaries between several health-care disciplines—in particular, dentistry, neurology, physical therapy and psychology—there is a variety of quite different treatment approaches.
These are the symptoms of TMJD, although not everyone who has TMJD may feel any or all of the symptoms. These include, but are not limited to:
1.Unable to open mouth all the way
2.Pain when trying to close mouth or bite down
3.Feeling as if lower jaw muscles are tensed too tight
4.Popping or clicking when the jaws are opened
5.Popping or clicking when attempting to chew
6.Transient headache
7.Persistent headache
8.Stiffness in the neck and shoulders(Severe Case)
9.Upper backache(Severe Case)
10.Lower backache(Severe Case)
11.Numbness in the extremities(Severe Case)

the exact same thing used to happen to me in high school. the problem si you grind your teeth at night. i went to the dentist and got a mouthpiece made. granted, it makes you feel like a dorg with this crazy thing in your mouth, but it does help. i used mine and it got better then i stopp and lost it and my jaw still gives me problems. it doesnt lock up anymore, but when i get sick, mad, or the weather makes a drastic change, it hurts. it also pops around alot. good luck!!
