OK so i swore in yesterday to be in the naval reserve. my job is dental assistant. So my first A school is corpseman(or however you spell it) then i get taught the dental part. And my recruiter told me that if they needed to they could use me as a corpseman and send me with a marine unit(to iraq). Also though i'm in reserve and am supposed to only do 1 weekend a month he told me that if they needed me to i could be sent out for longer...So now i'm having second thoughts i mean the whole reason i joined the navy was so that i can do something not so dangerous and still make my family proud. But now i am kinda worried. and i want to back out but i dunno if i should...so my question is whats your opinion am i just worrying too much or not enough?

I know i can get out of my contract thats not what i'm asking. I'm asking if i'm just being too worried about it? How often does that happen?

I apologize to those who aren't afraid of death nearly as much as i am. Apparently i'm not right for this kind of work.

If you're having second thought about joining the military, there are several options you can take.
You may want to apply for conscientious objector status. I don't know if you can; however, this is a link you may want to try:

The Quakers (the religious sect) are quite helpful in these cases. They are against war, and may be able to point you in the right direction. At the least, they can help you get to Canada, but since you want to make your family proud, that may not be the best option for you.
Good luck.

Listen being a dental assistant out weighs bieng a corpsman. Theres alot less dental assistants in the military than there are medics. If and when you do go to Iraq, because I'm sure you'll go, you'll probably be in a dental clinic. And the 1 weekend a month thing is true, you really only have to do 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year, if your not deployed. You can voulenteer for other work and get paid for it. I wouldn't worry about it your scared now but when you get to school you'll be ready to go over trust me, they'll get you ready.

I'm with Chunky G. Do whatever you need to do to get out. Tell them the recruitor didn't explain everything to you before you took the oath. If you aren't willing to abide by the oath you took then don't burden the military with wasting time and money on your training. If you aren't willing to accept deployment and do what your country asks of you then you aren't entitled to the training and the income. If you are so concerned about your safety that you will shirk your responsibilities while others risk their lives daily I guarantee you the Marines wont want you anywhere around them. By the way...were you aware that navy corpsmen assigned to the FMF get some advanced infantry training with Marines?
To answer your last question, you don't join the reserves if you aren't prepared to accept deployment into a combat zone. Don't play a guessing game. Assume you will be then ask "am I willing".

You joined the reserves, which means that you are reserve Military. If they have a need to deploy to active status you will go. That has never been a secret. If you wanted to join a group that didn't go anywhere they maybe the boy scouts would have been a better choice.

If you joined the military today and did not think that you could be deployed maybe you can get out by claiming to not being smart enough for the military. Haven't you heard about all the reserve and guard units being deployed? Nope, sorry, being an idiot does not get you out of your committment.

Get out now! Are you worried more about people being proud of you for being in the military or dieing?! There are other ways to get schooling and recruiters are trained to be savvy sales people. Do what you want to do and not what you think others want you to do.

when you signed the dotted line you agreed to make the ultimate sacrifice if needed. Reguardless of what branch you joined. Anything can happen its like playing russian roulet. If thats your concern get out. From my experience i dont want anyone doubting their judgment by my side while on the battlefield.

come on! anyone nowadays who joins any branch of the military has got to know that sooner or later you are going to war. even if you join a reserve unit. face it, not enough people are joining regular units. think about this. if n. korea, china, irag, israel, all these nations don't control themselves, (and they won't), you are going to see the draft reinstated. a lot of our young men & women will be deployed into war, and it won't be pretty!!!! apparently you did not have a clear picture of your career choice.
