you want to drink water, and mke sure you don't have a cold, having a cold will make matters of " ear popping" even worse, what you'll want to do is cover your nostrils and breathe air through them to circulate some air pressure ito your ears, chewing some gum doesn't notoriously prevent or stop ear popping

When you yawn, do you hear a light "click" sound in your ears? If you do, then try forcing yourself to yawn when you get that pressure feeling. That "click" will allow the pressure to equalize.

On descent, you can also try the Valsalva maneuver. From Wikipedia: The Valsalva maneuver is used as a pressure equalization technique by scuba divers and airplane passengers to avoid barotrauma and discomfort inside their ears when they move to a higher pressure breathing environment.

To apply pressure in the eustachian tubes, a person using this technique pinches the nose, closes the mouth, and tries to exhale. The technique works by raising the pressure in the throat so that a small volume of air moves from the throat to the ears through the Eustachian tubes which connect them.

Yeah, chew gum. Chew vigarously. Do you have sinus problems? Or were you sick last time? Maybe take some sinus medication beforehand to relieve the preassure. I flew once with a cold and I thought my forehead was going to burst open! I know how you feel!

Chew gum and drink plenty of water. Flying makes you dehydrated as well.
