I have OCD with seeing people thow up.. I sometimes call it "barphobia". Anyways, me and my husband are planning on having kids... and I'm kind of scared that I'm going to see a lot of throwing up in the next 12 years or so... and its not like "eww barf" I seriously go bizerk... like I cry and scream and then I throw up whenever I see it or even think about it... do you think I'll be okay?! If not, do you know any ways I could get over this phobia? I might have to go to the doctor for it..

Spit up doesn't gross me out.. I'm talking about when they're older.

please don't say I need to grow up.. OCDs are not easy to cure and I am mature just the simple fact is... I can't stand barf!

I think that it would be better to go see your doctor or a therapist before having children . Some kids vomit a lot and others don't. There is no way that I know of to tell whether a child will puke a lot or not. (I don't think that they have found the hurling gene yet) You defiantly don't want to have a child and find out that you are not amongst the lucky parents with children that never throw up.

However, this is just the opinion of a complete stranger and you should take this and any answer with a grain of salt (Make up your own mind)

First, OCD is obsessive compulsive disorder. Do you have rituals you must do to relieve anxiety when you see vomit? Second, every child is different. My son is 3 and has never had a stomach flu virus that made him throw up, he only threw up a few times when he had an ear infection and the medicine was upsetting his stomach. My daughter, however, was lucky to go 2 months without some kind of bug and threw up frequently.
There are ways to treat phobias, exposure therapy would do wonders for you until vomit no longer bothered you. Look into it if you plan on having kids.

My kids don't throw up terribly much, but you can't have them. They're mine.

The thing is, though, it depends on what you mean by "throw up". Babies "spit up" a lot. After nursing (breast or bottle) they'll tend to burp up a bit of formula, sometimes larger amounts, sometimes smaller. If you get it into your head that this is throwing up, then you're in for a big problem.

Personally, though, if you can't deal with people throwing up, perhaps raising children isn't for you. There are a lot of "eww, gross!" things about children, and you can't just freak out and not deal with them.

Just my two cents.

My kids are still young. My older son (now 28 months) was a spitter-upper, and my younger son (12 months) wasn't. I understand you're asking about actual vomiting though, so I can't help you out there, as neither of them have actually vomited. HOWEVER, I can tell you that it might be different if it's YOUR kid who's vomiting. When your baby/toddler has the stomach flu and is vomiting, the last thing on your mind will be "eeew yuck...I'm going to throw up" All you're going to want to to is comfort your baby and help him feel better.

Try not to stress about it. I can sympathize--I'm not as bad as you sound, but strong smells trigger my gag reflex, especially in the morning. I've always been that way. If I smell a rotten food item or somebody farts and ESPECIALLY if somebody around me pukes, I will immediately wretch and usually vomit myself! It's hard to control--just have to cover my mouth and run away.

Unfortunately, my son inherited this trait (my mom's the same way, as are my brothers, my dad is not, so we all got it from mom, God bless her!). In pre-school, my son would gag and throw up at the smell of, say, egg salad in another students lunch--they used to call me to pick him up "sick" every other day! Luckily, he's gradually learning to control it, or at least to hold it and run for the garbage can!

Anyway....
One thing to keep in mind--your own child's bodily yuckiness will affect you differently than that of anyone else, even your own. Luckily, Mother Nature gives us a special tolerance for the gas, poo, spit-up, etc., that comes from our own offspring. You'll see, I promise!

BREASTFEED! Formula-fed babies have much, MUCH smellier barf and poop and other odors. The body mess of a breastfed baby might smell a little "cheese-y" but it's not unpleasant, and at first it has just a sort of sweet smell, even! I'm totally serious.

Keep your baby at least 45 degrees upright for feeding. A baby who feeds lying down will trap more gas, and will bring much more food back up when she burps.

Most babies and kids don't actually "throw up" unless they are sick. Spit-up isn't the same at all. It's liquid-y, not chunky or anything. And usually it's a tiny amount (a small burp's worth) as long as you're not jostling baby around too much or feeding him while he's lying down.

So don't worry, you'll survive vomit and worse if you do decide to have kids, and you'll be stronger for it!

Good luck!

Not much. Breastfed babies don't spit up very much, babies who drink formula spit up a lot. My daughter's 2 1/2 and I've only seen her "throw up" 3 or 4 times.

I understand your fear but honestly when it's your child you just think about them, how they feel, and getting the mess cleaned up. You'll get over your fear of barf.

With babies it's not that bad. Typically they will burp with a milky drool included. There's no really vomiting unless they're sick. All kids get sick, but adult vomiting is far worse. My daughter doesn't even really go through heaving before she vomits. If you're really that upset about it i would see a doctor first because there is quite a bit of "milk filled burps" the first few years.

i would see a doctor, or check into getting hypnotised to overcome it.of course ur kids are gonna throw up.and it wouldnt be fair if when ur kid got sick u went bizerk ur kid will feel like there is something wrong with it,when u become a parent u need to sacrifice alot and you'll deal with a million things u never imagined!!---nobody likes to see throw up and if it bothers u that much u need to fix the problem- dont bring a child into this world and subject him/her to that kind of behavior!

Seeing vomit is part of being a parent, babies barf a lot and when the kids get sick, get ready to run to the toilet. My husband has a weak stomach and he gags each time the kids vomit, but he deals with it and so can you
