Is this muscular or orthopedic (bone) pain? If in doubt, you would probably benefit from a trip to your doctor and/or a chiropractor. If orthopedic pain is suspected, you might be in for a round of x-rays to determine if there is some abnormality. If it's muscular pain, you may be prescribed anti-inflammatory medication(s) and/or be advised to limit/reduct activity and try to rest.

Be patient because it will take a while for back pain to ease up.

If you just injured it try heat. If its an older injury acting up try ice. I know it seems backwards for normal injuries but for backs it seems to work better , but whichever helps you really.
Light stretching can help too. If it gets worse or your leg/legs go numb go to the ER. You may want to take an antiinflamatory (such as tylenol) as well just in case there is some swelling that you cant see involved.

Yoga, yoga yoga. That is the best treatment for a bad back.
Take a yoga class immediately. Check out yoga books from library and do poses designed to help lower back. Yoga worked for me.

A hot bath, Bengay or one of those patches you stick on for pain. Lay on your back. Exercise more often when it is better to prevent it from happening again. A pain killer wouldnt hurt. I say Advil ought to be enough.

When you go to sleep, sleep on your back with a rolled up bath towel under your knees. This will take pressure off your lower lumbar. Take care!

IGNORE ALL THE OTHER ANSWERS AND GO SEE A DOCTOR - have it properly diagnosed by a medical professional instead of taking the advice of some shmuk on the internet.

Lie down flat on your back with your feet flat on the floor (so your knees are bent).

Slowly raise one knee towards you and grab it with your hands. Pull gently. Do it with the other leg.

Straighten your left leg. Keeping your right one bent, hold it with your left hand and pull it across your body, keeping your shoulders on the floor. Do it on the other side.

Hope this helps.
