I have always wanted to know and even though I don't have children yet I am looking to start getting things for when I am ready to have kids. I heard about the product before but didn't really know if or how it works, and what kinds of things you can get.

Depends if you mean the videos or the learning products. I agree with the other answers - the videos are better than most of what is on TV for very young children but none is needed. RE: the learning products, it's the interaction with the adult that makes it happen. Children learn through a combination of imitation and exploration in the context of close, caring relationships.

These videos don't actually teach kids anything - they entertain them. If you are trying to decide between having your kids watch SpongeBob or Baby Einstein while you make dinner, Baby Einstein videos are better. Why? Because they are simple and entertaining for very young children.

The only thing they do is introduce them to some classical music. But you could do that by turning on the radio...

You are the one who will teach them colors, the alphabet, etc. Sesame Street and some other programs do this too, but I wouldn't approach the use of TV that way.

(The Kaiser Foundation and the American Academy of Pediatrics both say: NO TV or videos before age two.)

I think the toys help kids learn by playing. Playing is the most important part of early learning. The videos are great too. Kids learn to differentiate colors, etc. My friend's daughter and nephew loved the videos when they were really young. In fact they were the only thing that calmed her daughter down when she was upset. Just use them sparingly. You don't want your kids to get addicted to television. Activity is important too.

doctors say avoid TV shows for kids till they are two years old. Before then, it robs them of developing their own attention span and it also teachers them to focus straight ahead tuning out what is side-to-side of them. I can spot the frequent TV viwers in my preschool class from DAY ONE! (and it's not for the good)
