I'm referring specifically to the uproar in Toronto and on the news to the new ruling that Cops should wear name tags which may put their families in danger. I think it sucks.

badge #

Certainly a badge number should clearly displayed.

I go back and forth on the name. Do you want police officer's children targeted by disgruntled perps? Or is the cop a bit more motivated to behave well when his name is out there for all to see?

In the interest of civility all around, if I can see his/her name, I'll address them as "Officer (or Lt, Capt) Smith". That's better than "Hey you." or "Number 293". Really, I'd say "Excuse me, Officer." but it seems more impersonal.

I suspect the balance point varies with location. Full disclosure in a small town (certainly in ours). Numbers only in the big city.

They should wear both. As citizens we need to have more than one piece of ID. For that matter all government employees should have to wear a name tag and another piece of ID. After all they are paid with your tax money. In cases where under cover work or national security is involved, then yes some secrecy would be needed so they should not wear name tags.

It is important for citizens to be able to identify and discern one law enforcement official from another. One of many reasons for having name tags and badges is that it holds each individual officer accountable for his actions. When an officer can be easily identified he can be easily reported for misconduct.

Yes, and if it were up to me, I would make all government officials wear name tags.

You can ask an officer their name and their badge number without offending them.

YES, BECAUSE EVERYTIME I HAVE HAD AN ENCOUNTER WITH A COP I WAS MISTREATED AND THE COP WAS OVER USING THE AUTHORITY TO THE POINT WHERE IT HAD TO BE REPORTED.
