Anti-Lock brakes will not allow the wheel from stop spinning and cause you to skid when you slam on the brakes. This is so you slow quickly without losing control of the car while you are skidding.
Do not pump the brakes if you have anti-lock brakes. It confuses the computer when trying to apply brakes.
Buy a car that has anti-lock brakes. Insurance companies give discounts for anti-lock brakes.

anti- lock brakes receives information from a sensor on the wheel spindle bearings overriding driver inputs by pulsing the brakes many times per second. This prevents the brakes from being locked up causing the inertia of the car to create an uncontrollable skid, when this happens it is impossible to steer the vehicle. The wheels must be allowed to rotate at least minimally if steering control is to be maintained. The driver of a car with anti-lock brakes simply places all the pressure they can on the brake pedal and continues to steer, you will feel the brake pedal pulsing when the system is active. There are pros and cons to the system...maintenance etc.
A driver of a vehicle without the anti-lock system must alternately apply and release the brakes to obtain the same results, this may be something that many drivers are unable to do in a panic situation. Tests have indicated that the driver with anti-lock brakes can stop in a shorter distance while maintaining directional control. General Motors pioneered the system with being the inventor of the system.

Without anti lock brakes, if you were to slam on the brakes, your wheels would lock up and you would lose control of your vehicle. What ever direction you are pointed in is the direction you would stay in until you let off the brakes. It also takes you longer to stop. With Anit lock brakes a computer automatically lets off the brakes a little bit right before the wheels lock up so you have maximum stopping power and still have control of your vehicle. Test it out... it is fun. If you have ABS and you live where there is snow, go to a big parking lot, unplowed. Get going about 25 mph and slam on the brakes. Turn the steering wheel hard on way or the other. You are still able to steer your vehicle. Without ABS you would have kept going straight. If you don't have snow, do it on a dirt road a grassy field.

Anti lock brakes have a computer that pulses the brake when you step on them so your wheels will not stop and cause you to skid. This way you can stop straight or still turn.
Regular brakes can stop your wheels if you push down hard enough. When this happens and your still moving, the car will skid and who knows where you will end up.
The first vehicle I had with anti lock brakes was my van. Boy do they make a racket when the the anti lock kicked in! It scared me half to death!

Anti-lock brakes are designed with a computer in them that measures the rotation rate of the wheel and adjusts the brake pressure so that it doesn't cause the wheel to lock up. Non-anti-lock brakes don't have any computer and if you press hard enough on them it causes the wheels to lock up and you can lose control of your vehicle.

If you slam on the brake pedal on anti-lock brakes, your car tires will still roll to the stop. However, if you slam on the brakes with non-anti locks, your tire locks up and make the screetching sound and the car loses control and travels the direction it was originally going. With anti-locks, the tires don't lock up so therefore, you still have control of the vehicle.

Anti-lock brakes run through a computer in your car that basically tells the brakes to pulsate when you need to do a panic stop. They will very rapidly pulsate, slowing the car down quicker and giving the driver better control in panic situations. Non anti-lock brakes will not pulsate and will lock up the tires in a panic stop, causing the vehicle to go out of control in some situations.

Anti lock brakes automatically "pump" themselves, i.e. they will automatically release for a split second to allow the wheels to roll and prevent the car from skidding. Regular brakes don't.
