Lighting a candle and placing it on an altar is a way to remind one's self that the light of Christ shines eternally, especially on the souls of the dead person who the candle is lighted in memory of.

Sometimes they symbolize the Deity that they are worshiping. Sometimes wishes they want to be granted or prayers they are sending to God. Candles are symbolic for many different things. What I think everyone can agree upon is that the significance of it being on the alter is something the worshiper hold close in their own heart.

In the tabernacle there were seven lamp-stands burning with oil that was suppose to be lit continuously, the light symbolizes Jesus, He is the light of the world, the oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit, Jesus was anointed with oil to preach the gospel to the world.

Before the days of electricity, it was also the only light source for the priest to be able to read the bible / prayer book. And what most everyone else has said.

I think it originally comes from a pagan tradition of the smoke carrying the prayers up to heaven for god to hear.
