In church my pastor sometimes refers to God as Jehovah. . .why? I would ask him personally but there are like 6,000 other members so he's kind of hard to get to with state troopers and all.

Because this is the personal name of God, "LORD"

The name of God that occurs most frequently in the Old Testament is Jehovah or Yehovah. In Hebrew this name is composed of three words: "Je" represents a word, "ho" represents a word, and "vah" also represents a word, Je means “is,” ho means “was,” and vah means “will be.” Therefore, Jehovah translated into English is “the One who is, was, and always will be.” The verb to be can also be translated as “to be present.” So Jehovah means that God is present, was present, and will be present forever, and also that He is, was, and will be forever. In addition, this word also means “self-existing and ever-existing, without beginning or end, forever remaining and never ceasing to be,” and “forever unchanging.” In Exodus 3:14-15, “I AM WHO I AM” is the meaning of Jehovah.

Jehovah is a name used in the Old Testament to identify God. It means, "The Eternal One." and is first used in Exodus 6:3:
"And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. "
Jehovah is also used in Genesis in combined form, like "Jehovah-jireh" (the Lord will provide) in Genesis 22 in the original Hebrew .

Next time you go to church, take your Bible with you if you are not already doing so, and if your congregation is that large, seek out one of the Elders to speak with, that's why Elders and Assistant Pastors are there. They're probably listed on the bulletin board somewhere.

It's not exactly wrong to call the Almighty by the impersonal "God", just as it's not wrong to call one's offspring "Child". If we want a familiar and close relationship, however, it makes sense to use the personal name of someone we love. The Scriptures encourage us to use God's personal name.

The Hebrew name “Yahweh” (or “Yehowah”) seems to accurately pronounce the divine name. Just as the Hebrew name “Yeshua” (or “Yehoshua”) is translated into “Jesus” in English, the Hebrew name “Yahweh” is translated into “Jehovah” in English.

The important thing is to use God’s personal name in whatever language you speak, rather than insisting upon the impersonal! The name “Yahweh” is certainly preferable to the non-name “God” or “Lord”. If you speak English, feel free to use the name "Jehovah".

(Psalms 83:18) That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth

(John 17:26) [Jesus said] I have made your name known to them and will make it known, in order that the love with which you loved me may be in them

God has many names in the scriptures. Jehovah is only one of His names. When He was manifested in the flesh His name was the Lord Jesus Christ. He became a man so He could come to earth and die for our sins. Philippians 2: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: Philippians 2: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Philippians 2: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
