How soon should I potty train my 15 month old? Daddy suggested taking his diaper off and rushing to the bathroom when baby starts pooping. Would this work? Any other ideas?

Hi there,

Hope this helps. I agree that 15 months is a little young to actually "start" potty training. This is something I found to really help though. We had a potty in the restroom but how much time does a baby spend in the restroom? As crazy as this may sound it really worked for us. We put a potty with us in the living room. This is where we spent the most time. My daughter was constantly sitting on it and we would read while she sat on it. I would also constantly tell her what the potty was and what we do on it.
Then, when I felt she was "ready" for potty training, she had nothing to fear. She was so familiar with the potty being there and so proud of herself when she used it. Once she had the hang of it, we moved the potty away from our living room. By this time, she knew when she had to go and knew where to go to find her potty.
I know it sounds a little silly but I tell ya it works. Introduce children to the potty early. There is no harm at all. My friend never even showed her daughter a potty until she was 2. Now she is 2 1/2 and screams whenever she is "forced" to be near it. I honestly believe if they see it early, it's just that much easier for them to get used to it.
My daughter was completely potty trained by the time she turned 2. She's now 3 1/2 and she's only had 1 accident and has never had an accident at night.
Good luck!

15 months is too young. You need to wait until he's at least 20 months, but even then he might not be ready. Just start talking about it while you're changing his diaper. Say things like "are you going to use the potty soon?" and just get him used to talking about it. No, rushing him to the toilet is not a good idea. It will probably be startling to him if you are running him to the toilet and he will most likely be afraid of the toilet if you approach it that way. It just takes time. Good luck!

That worked for both my boys but the only true way is the child will let you know. sometimes its not til 3 that they are ready ! Take it from me I am a mother of 2 boys ages 5 & 3 I got the oldest trained at 3 1/2 just when he was starting school (he is ADHD though) I had the second one at 2. We just took off the diaper and let him run. also taking them potty every 45 mins work! Put cereal in the tolite to use as "targets" reward with stickers of a peice of candy. GOOD LUCK!!!! it is a big milestone! FYI Pull-ups dont work!!!! Only at night did i every use these and i used Good-Nites

get a potty chair for him so he can use it when he wants to. potty training is not something you can force. but if you make it available he'll get used to it and not be afraid. when ever you or daddy have to go ask him if he wants to try too that way he'll figure out what it's for. eventually he'll start telling you before he goes that he needs to potty. rushing him in there while he's pooping will only scare him.

15 months is still a baby.

I would say you should start potty training when all these conditions are true:
1. Older than 2 year
2. He is showing interest
3. He does not like a diaper dirt
4. He knows the difference between poo-poo and pee-pee.

You should start potty training him now. Just put him in regular underwear and let him get used to it. He will probably go in them a few times but if you have a weekend or a few days to devote to it he might catch on. This has worked for quite a few kids at the Day Care I work at.

He is too young. He cant control his body yet in that way. Most Dr's will say not to even think about until the child is at least 2 years old and even then he may not be ready.

My wife was insistent that we start our son by or before two years of age.
Boys are usually more difficult to train than girls, or so I've been told.
Yet, no one told our son about that learning curve and he learned very quickly...of course, it helped that we made it a fun event and he got rewarded.

Fun, you ask?
Try putting in a few Cheerios in the bowl and have him use it as target practice.

you need to wait untill he is ready and can controll the urinary sphincter muscle. he may be ready when he shows an interest when anyone else goes to the bathroom, or wants his diaper changed after filling it. and when he can pull his pants down.
