Lake District obviously. Good place for safety as well as comfort is the Camping Club of GB site at Keswick (Derwentwater-side).
For seclusion, try alongside any small lake called Blea Tarn (more than one in The Lake District). Beware lakeside evening flies in high summer, take a spray against them!
Farther afield you could have a go at Lac Leman (ie Lake Geneva) near Lausanne/Morges. Or Lake Bled. Or Lake Huron. Or Lake Taupo (NZ) even (but they all seem to have evening flies in their summertimes, and lake water is usually too cold for comfortable swimming).

As people are saying go to the Lake district in Cumbria.
If you want peace and quiet go to one of the lakes which are not as popular with visitors, possibly Wastwater or Derwent waters.
If you want to mix in and get talking to other folk head to windermere.
Conistan is also a very good lake with a small village at the north end of the lake and a small mountain which is relitavley easy to climb. (Dont attempt to climb The old man of conistan unless you are an experienced climber.)
My personal favourite is lake Wastwater because it is very peacful and is one of the biggest lakes in the district. it is surrounded by a huge array of mountains which include Scafell pike (Largest in England) do not attempt to climb this one either.
Whichever lake you choose to go to im sure youll have a great time.
P.s Scotland & Ireland also have some stunning lakes surrounded by exellent scenery.
