its so annoying when people answer a question with a question.
☻ oremus_fratres: stop lying to yourself. its really sad.
☻ and some of you are getting really defensive. it oozes with guilt. its a spectacle.
☻ to answer (finally), as far as i know, my ancestors would most likely have been on the market as opposed to being the purchasers. my ancestry spans so many countries.
no matter, it was all a sad state of human affairs as far as i can see.
costly price for jazz.

Not all people's ancestor's engaged in slavery. I think this question can cause some anger to arise, but we all want diplomacy and a peaceful discussion. Mostly the wealthy plantation owners had slaves. Also, some people treated their slaves humanly. Also, its good to note that slavery still happens today. There have been and still are people from every race, religion, time period, nation, gender, that participated in the unfornuate act of slavery. But many did not as well, and many tired to free to slaves. Some are still doing so like in prostitution rings, child labor, etc. I think if we all work together toward being the solution, we can end slavery and better the lives of ourselves, others and future generations.

Well half of my ancestors are German Jews so they did not profit from slavery. They were too busy being POWs during the holocaust.
1/4 of my ancestors are Cherokee indians so they didn't profit either because they were too busy living on the reservation trying to survive.
Finally ok we get down to the 1/4 of my white ancestors that were here in the USA back then. Hate to tell you but owning a slave was so expensive back then that it was actually rare for a family to be able to own one slave. This portion of my family was very poor and lived in the mountains of NC... none of them could affors a slave.

This great nation was built on the income from slavery. This is undeniable. So was Rome, so was Egypt. However, let's not lose sight of history. It was the African Kings and Queens that participated in the selling of their own people into slavery. And....although not many....there were black plantaion owners that held slaves. Let's also not forget that it was a white president that set them free and a white president that demolished separatism and another white president that introduced the concept that blacks should be hired over whites to even the playing field even if the white employee was more qualified. It was also a black that shot MLK.

be sure to ask the Spanish, Portuguese and other European countries, and the Africans as well - I think they made some pretty big bucks along they way. Slavery in Eastern Europe, the Baltics, parts of Asia, and former Soviet Republics as well as in Africa goes on today. Is your point that in the history of the US, that was part of history? Sure it was, but the real question is why on earth is it allowed today? Questions like this try to imply that slavery was an invention of the USA.

Wow. Now THAT is an eye-opener. I doubt that any of my ancestors were slave owners, thankfully.
Best Wishes!
EDIT: I find it abhorrent that most answers (so far) are actually rationalizing ownership of humans! These people need serious help. But they seem to reflect the morals of the past AS WELL AS the morals of today.
Indeed, this is a sad commentary of the times the US finds itself in.

We can not answer for the way the world was in the 1800's. We can not even answer to the way the world was in the 1930's-40's when there were slaves. It was the way of the times back then- get over it. It has nothing to do with us now.

I don't know, I'm not responsible for anything that happened before August 6,1958. You see I wasn't born, don't owe anybody any apologies for what others did in the past, and am really very tired of this same old stuff. Could I offer you a little "whine" with that cheese?

My Christian ancestors made enough money off of slavery to start a war over it and kill many people. Then they started a secret society (the ever famous KKK) to kill these people and make their lives a living Hell. Now they tot guns, wear swastikas, and want to overthrow the government so they can ruthlessly kill anyone they deem inferior.
Such is the peacefulness of Christianity.

seriously.. who cares.. i hope my ancestors were loaded from slave trade.. cuz that was what people were doing back then and i hope they were successful. Just like I hope my children are successful doctors and lawyers and what people are doing today. Get over the past, it doesn't even matter a little. The value of the past is to make sure we dont' repeat our mistakes.. not to whine, cry, and blubber over for hundreds of years becuase we are an annoying dork who can't get over what people who've been dead for 200 years thought was acceptable.

My family has been spiritually and financially wealthy for the last 9 generations...old money, if you will. My g-g-grandfather was imprisoned for 5 years for buying slaves and setting them free. His wife taught hundreds of Africans how to read and write in the underground railroad. They where all Irish catholic.
