Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto Ontario Canada, great displays, special exhibits are astounding, kids love the place, from the time they enter the main entrance foyer( high domed with inlay work) till they are burnt out and can not absorb any more. Boys tend to obsess in the armor room, especially the Samurai armor suits from medieval Japan, or in the native dioramas.

Exploratorium in San Francisco - kids over three years love all the hands on activities. Adults are completely entertained by the science info.

KidSpace in Pasadena, California is good for young children. They had many bug-related exhibits last time we were there.

The DeYoung Museum in San Francisco is great - fun things to climb on outside, interesting art, yummy cafe and beautiful views from the tower.

Science and Industry in Chicago. My kids loved it!!! They have a display of infants prior to birth. It is the best teaching display ever. When you actually see the little faces on the 4 week old fetus, it leaves quite an impact on you and your kids(if you have any). It gave them a higher reguard for life, I think. They have an understanding of what all the hype is about abortion, and it definitly gave them a firm belief in where they stand. Oh, and the "slices" of the human body, very gross, but, very cool. Would take everyone to that place, Very Educational!!!
