It cooks off the grease and such. It will make it easier to clean and reduce the number of flare ups the next time you grill. It isn't necessary, most people don't. It is suppose help your burner and such last longer too... waste fuel or replace parts sooner... both cost money and there is no way of knowing if it will really help your burner last longer. Your choice!

It's not necessary, but it bruns off all the residue from cooking that your grill had on it. Save propane and cut down on pollutionby buying a grill brush instead.

They claim it helps burn off any bits of meat / fat / grease still in the grill so they don't rot and cause a health hazard.
It isn't necessary if you do not grill animal products.

Some people do it to burn off any small fat splatters, its entirely up to you but it can be a good idea if food spat a lot during cooking. A minute should be long enough though, no need to waste energy.

We always leave it on, it burns off all the cruddy stuff, then it is a lot easier to scrape.
