If I traded places with Jesus and died on the cross it would do nothing. I am not the son of God , I am not God, and I am not the messiah. He was the only one who could do that. Why would I trade for no reason?

Jesus gets the fame because He's the only one who could qualify as the perfect sacrifice required by God to obtain forgiveness for sins.
It is good to desire to lay down your life for others, especially for your enemies as Jesus did, but no body could have walked as Jesus did, which was 'being tempted in every way, yet without sin'. It was a divine call on His life, and the entirety of sin that He bore for the world on that cross would have been more than any of us could have handled.
Most people aren't willing to die for others, much less their enemies. Most people don't even want to die.

The issue is not whether people would be willing to die for their faith, or to help others. The issue is that anyone else dying for the sins of mankind would not do any good. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice because he was without sin. God could only accept someone pure, without any blemish or sin. No one else in the history earth has ever been qualified to die for mankind's sins except Jesus. While there have been many heroic deeds where people have died to save others, they could only save them physically. They could not save them spiritually, for eternity. However, they are to be commended for their heroism.

Jesus gets all the fame because that altruism you speak of comes largely from his example on the cross. Also, more happened there than meets the eye. It wasn't only altruism that saved all of mankind but a connection from the Godhead to mankind directly. Christ wasn't just some shmo. He was God incarnate. He had become one with the Father. The firefighter suffers for a very short time to save someone's physical life. Christ suffered for much longer on the cross while he was completely innocent, in order to save the world's spiritual life. Christians will still die a physical death, but they are assured of spiritual salvation thanks to Christ Jesus.

Most people wouldn't do it because Jesus was the only person ever born to be able to pull it off. I'm sure that if a person knew for certain that their life would be enough to save the entire world from damnation, then they would agree to sacrifice it. Jesus was the only person ever born into this world without sin. He had no original sin, which is the sin passed down from father to child, since Jesus's father was God the father, and he never committed a sin on earth, so his sacrifice was perfect, and was the only one that could save us.

You say you would give up your life for mankind, but you would not. If you went through what Jesus went through, you would quit on the first sign of trouble. I guarantee it. If those you were saving were cursing you, spitting at you, and hurting you, I guarantee you would not go through with it. My brother is a firefighter, and even he would not do it. The people's lives that he saves are grateful. Not everyone is grateful to Jesus as they should be. You would not want to die like that, and not even have people appreciate it.

even Jesus in His human form prayed that His death would not be necessary.
it is human nature to fear and resist death, pain and suffering, except for the mentally ill who seek death for no gain.
i would like to believe that my faith is strong enough to trade places with Jesus if He asked.
that would however violate the reason for His coming to earth. He did so knowing that he would atone for the sins of the people and that He would die.
God did prevent the earthly figure of Jesus from knowing the actual time or day. This is significant because we do not know the time or the day when he will return, or when we will die ourselves.
take for instance the lady that was driving through the tunnel, probably talking with her husban, upset that the radio reception is not good in the tunnel and the BLAM!!!!! a 12-ton section of steel and concrete dropped on her car and killed her.
there are many people who sacrifice their lives for others, the police, firefighters, soldiers and teachers to name a few. they give their life to service and sometimes die in the line of duty saving someone that others may see as being useless to society.
God in human form (Jesus) knows how many it takes to save us all. without the suffering and death of Jesus, God could grant us all an eternal life of His blessings.
that is not the deal though. we are given teachings and yet many of those who profess to believe do not and fall short of the glory of the Lord, as i am taught...not my place to judge their souls.
the fame goes to the one your profess your belief in.

Because Jesus had more courage than us, and some are not looking at the big picture, many have died to save Christianity, If it wasn't for these martyer, saints we would not have christianity today, this is why it has been spread, many were killed for their beliefs, young children were burned in fire for just saying they were christians, and many upon many were imprisisoned and persecuted, fed to the lions and animals at the Roman colusium, and crusified, we only have the Bible today because so many have given their lives to tell us about Jesus Christ, so many people do not realize what freedom of religion means.

Because Christians understand that The purpose of Christ was to die for the sins of mankind. He was the sacrificial lamb of God. Because HE was the very Son of God only HE could do this for us. So therefore your question has no merit to it.
Plus Jesus did not do it for the fame HE did it because HE loved us.

Maybe it's because the "he died for our sins" theory was conjured up over 1000 years after Jesus' death and thus had no intention of saving man from sin. Check the link.
