No you don't need to but if you want to get the best picture and sound you should.Component video is analog HD because it transfer signals form digital to analog to digital again. HDMI makes digital to digital transfer. you'll get the same resolution 720p &1080i not 1080p because HDMI 1.3 was not ready when it launched. but HDMI will offer a more clean and clear picture.

At present you don't NEED an HDMI connection for HD-DVD (many earlier HD tv sets don't have one). The current HD-DVD players also have component outputs. If your TV can accept HDMI, that will give the best quality (both on HD discs and standard DVDs).

There is one potential problem for people who use component outputs. The specs for HD-DVD (and Blu-Ray) allow a disc to contain a "flag" which will suppress high definition output from the component terminals (HD movies would play in SD). This is because HDMI (as now implemented) has copy-protection capability, while the analog outputs do not. So if a film studio gets nasty they can decide to activate this flag on some movies, and you will not be able to view those in HD from the component outputs. At present, it appears that none of the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs released have implemented this, and some studios are saying that they do not plan to. But that is now; who knows what they might decide to do in the future.

You will need a HD DVD player to play HD DVD Movies. HD-DVD players should come with the HDMI cable. Toshiba is the only company that has a HD DVD Player out in the market now. Most likely you dont have the correct player to watch HD DVD's unless you got the Toshiba HD DVD player. Also you TV needs to be able to support 1080P. I think you can use component cables also. Check the website for toshiba to find out the specs
