Most people that want to commit suicide don't talk about it, so if they do they are looking for someone to talk to......some one to make them feel that things will get better in time.....the best way to help someone is to let them know that they are important and what ever it is will pass and maybe suggest them seeing a counsellor

Remember that they don't really want to die; they just want to end the pain they're going through. Metanoia's webpage about it (link below) puts it really well--suicidal thoughts come when your pain outweighs your coping mechanism. If you can only hold twenty pounds and someone piles 200 pounds of stuff into your arms, you'll fall down, no matter how badly you want to stay up and be strong.
The best thing is to take them seriously, ask them sincere questions, let them know they are valued, and take away some of that weight for them. Carry some of it for them. If you can, it's good to help a suicidal person see past their own pain, maybe by volunteering or pet-sitting or having them mow your lawn. That kind of thing helps them see that they can offer good to the world, too.
I'm glad for the internet, which allows people to talk about it anonymously. When I was a kid, I worried that I'd be packed off to an institution right away if I breathed a word of it!
To Cherylacbus1: That kind of thing would only have reinforced my isolation and paranoia. Who wants to talk if they're going to have the "crazy" label slapped onto them and get packed away someplace?!

Many times those who try to commit suicide are really crying out for someone to help them, or to just listen to them. They may be lonely & are in desparate need of some semblance of caring & love.
Mother Teresa said that there was more need for love in this world than for anything else.

Anybody considering suicide on this forum right now should check themselves into a behavioral center in their local hospitals right now.
Life has its ups and downs, and we are put on this earth to wave them out for the purpose of acquiring greater compassion.
Seek therapy if your whole world is in chaos or falling apart.
Get help if you are on street drugs, and the wackiest things are happening in your life.
Get help if you are suffering from any kind of Post traumatic stress syndrome.
Rx's will help, and if they don't seek natural therapies like:
GABA to calm down, but don't overdose on this.
5-HTP for depression
Suntheanine for stress.
Don't use in conjunction with Rx's, but convince your doctor AFTER being on RX's for at least 6 to 8 months of no relief that you want his/her help in reducing slowly your intake of RX's. They might just put you on something else, and that is your choice to consider. Do know that you have a choice.
But do activities that reduce these elements. All of these following suggestions will reduce anxiety, depression and stress:
* walk in park
* jog, excersize
* tennis
* hanging with friends
* prayer
* meditation
* yoga
* volunteer
* talk with elderly
* bring a recipe or salad to a neighbor
If you are suicidal, go to emergency room today.

I think what people want is help. They don't want to commit suicide. They are searching for alternitives but cannot find them on their own. That's what we're here for.

They don't. They're just looking for attention.
If someone really, truly wants to kill themselves, they'll just do it. Not log on to Yahoo! Answers and make a post about it.
