Toyotas are good - they are made very simple, so there is practically nothing to break, plus parts are fairly cheap.
If your family will fit into Corolla, that would be most dependable sedan. If you need a minivan, Last model Caravan is fairly cheap and doesn't have major problems although minor things are common. Sienna and Odyssey are not too bad, but they are usually more expensive...

I wouldn't be a good source to ask, since I mostly buy cars to mess around with and work on. Pretty much any new car will be dependable, or at least be under warranty. I hear that BMW has some reliability issues, but if you're a single mom with 3 kids, you probably won't be getting one of those. To be honest, most domestic companies make very reliable cars, and when they do happen to break down, the parts are almost always a little cheaper.

For three kids, I would go with the Camry or Accord.
Kinda depends on how many carseats you will need, if any.
Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic are also good. Try to get side airbags.

I've had 2 Hondas (Civic) and my mom has had 2 Hondas (Prelude & Accord) and it is one of the most reliable cars out there. They are relatively inexpensive to buy & maintain and they are safe. You also get good gas mileage which is important now a days. On par (or maybe better) are Toyotas. I've heard extremely good things about them, so I would certainly consider those two makers.

Honda Civic sedan. My single mother had one and never changed the oil. Then my sister bought it and put another 100 thousand miles on it. Neither of them were great at maintaining cars however that little Civic just kept going.

You must relay evaluate your situation you need space and comfort most mini vans fall apart after 110,000 miles. SUV's are hard and gas and will be a strain on your budget. I would recommend a Subaru wagon for your case descent gas mileage and enough space for you and your kids and also there stuff going back and forth to school. Good luck to you.

I've found that if you treat any car half decently, it will be dependable for at least a good ten years. I've had pretty good luck with Oldsmobiles and Saturns (although Saturns have tendencies to have oil problems).
