At 15 your bones are still partly made from cartilage so braces might actually help you.
For thoracic scoliosis, they will probably insert rods along your spine which will remain there for the rest of your life but try not to worry about that, these permanent attachments are quite normal in surgery and it shouldn't hamper you daily activites. But you won't be allowed to do any rigious contact sports though - a small price to pay though.
You should return to normal within 8-10 months.
Lumbar surgery is slightly different in that you will need to wear an underarm brace for several months and the operation involves fusing your bones together.
All surgery carries risk but scoliosis surgery has a very high success rate among your age group. Choose your surgeon carefully though.
Good luck

try those braces first your still growing and possibly you wont have to have surgery follow the doctors orders completely dont lose weight unless he tells you to and lose if you need to.i knew a girl who had the rods placed into her back as a teenager but older than you.they do stay in until your spine is straighter than it was. the surgeon will make that determination.dont worry about scars sense at one time or another everyone will have a few.

my daughter had etioscoliosis which i understand to basically mean the beginnings of it- she is fine now- a slight curve but nothing to get concerned about. she is 18 now and it was detected thru school exams when she was about 14.
with your young age- i would be inclined to believe that the braces will be all you have to do. don't worry about the surgery right now- no reason to believe that you will have to have anything like that , doctors have to tell you the worst case scenarios just in case you are that one hundreds of a percent that the braces aren't enough for.
be positive! everythings gonna be just fine

You should not ask such a question on here, you should talk to your Doctor and your Doctor only in such a case because others will mislead you and each case differs from the next. I could tell you my sister had the sergury and had really bad scars and the you'd be scared, while your case could be totally different. So please don't take everyones advise your case is different from everyone elses. Call your Doctor ask him anything you want he has to answer your questions and you are entitled , remember you are paying him!!

My friend had scoliosis and had surgery. I think they actually placed metal rods under her skin along her vertebrae. It did help her. I'm not sure if the rods were removed or not.

I'm not a doctor, but my friend has that condition too..
Back Braces almost ALWAYS help.
Surgery should only be used as a last resort.

Please don't ask for medical advice on a general Yahoo area. Research it properly on medical sites (webmd, for instance) and talk to medical professionals.
