The first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck

Take it to puppy school. Pet Smart and a lot of other animal stores offer different types of training. I have a 2 month old Jack Russel and she starts school tonight. It is 99.00 for 8 weeks of classes. Once a week. Or you can get books on how to train a specific breed of dog, or one that tells you how for all dogs in general.

the best way to train a puppy is NOT by taking it to a class!!! By doing that a dog learns to listen to the trainer, not to you. instead, there is a great book called "Smarter Than You Think" that explains things so that they are easy to understand. it will teach YOU how to train YOUR OWN puppy. it really is best that you be the trainer.

Knowledge. Watch Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic. He is magic. Consistency. Crates. I use a crate for the first year. All my critters have been completely housebroken. Even my 4 Yorkies. Be calm. Do what Cesar tells you to do and you will have a well-balanced family member for many years to come. Always remember they live to be 15 sometimes. The first year will be a big investment but worth the time if done correctly. Best of luck. Be the pack leader. They don't lose their temper. Sami

Get an awesome book called "Puppy Preschool" by John Ross, It is really awesome. He also has another book on training called "dog talk". Dog training classes are also pretty awesome. I use both of these books and they are wonderful. I bred my collie, and by the time I sold the puppies they were all housetrained! That is at 8 weeks! It's really very simple, and of course collies are SO smart it is extra easy.

Lots of patience, positive reinforcement, and persistance. Repetition and consistancy are key. Can I also say that My dogs comands were trained with not only words, but motions just incase something ever happened to their hearing. Keep commands simple, like teaching them to sit, don't say sit down, just say sit. Also make sure it's positive, use lots of training treats, and a proper tone, not a mean or over aggressive one, just a normal, clear voice.

ok um you better tech it very strict and don't like spoil it and don't ever let it teach you whose boss 'cause it will start to be the alpha male. or female. lol. um how i train my husky puppy is that i just get some small treats and do either hand motions or say it about 15 times a day. my pup already knows how to roll jump lay and sit. and people say that they are untrainable. ha! so maybe that will help i guess. if not thanks 4 the points.

One of the biggest things we did when our dog was a puppy was to make sure that we praised him and gave him a treat when he did his business outside where he was supposed to. I would reccomend general obedience classes as well with you participating with the dog so that he/she knows that you're the boss. We did these things with our dog and he only messed in the house twice when we got him. Trust the dog when they're at the door, they're telling you they have to go! Most of all have PATIENCE!! It does take time and won't happen overnight!

I think the best way is to go to a pet store that trains like petsmart. I did it to my dog and he really is a good dog!

Be gentle with it. Remember, it's a baby, and if it messes up, it doesn't know any better. Your local pet stores/ animal shelters/ vet might have some suggestions for a good trainer in the area, who can give you some basic classes.
