Get some mesh screen from a home supply store and make a lid out of it. It should be simple enough, just get the window screening and cut it to fit. Then you can just tie it tightly to the top of the fish bowl with a string or even wire, so that it's removable.

I put a rock or stone on top to keep my cat out of the bowls! Really, I had the same problem and it helps. I found stones that are just big enough to set on top of the bowl and still allow air into the bowls. Also if your Betta came from a store that has a plastic cup with a vent hole in the lid you can use the lid on top also. IF you are using a VASE shaped glass bowl with a WIDE top but slimmer NECK just put the lid right down into it it will stop at the neck and keep the cat from LIFTING it off .
You can use any type of lid, if it fits inside the NECK of the bowl it is harder for the cat to get a grip on it and pull it off, But a rock helps weight it down if Kitty has learned to tap on the lid and get it off.
I have a GEODE rock on one of the bowls and my kittty cannot move it at all! There are still air holes around the top of the bowl to allow some air in.
It is in a bettas nature to HOP from POND to POND they do this in search of food. So you should cover the top even if you do not have a cat.
NOTE: do not let some people tell you that these fish should not be kept in small containers. If you have a small container and no filter can be kept just fine, just feed less and or clean more often.
If fed daily clean once a week, good rule of thumb, Feed on MON. and WED. and clean on the weekends.

This isn't real "innovative", but you can put him on a book shelf that has no room for the kitties. I think you could also put it where they can't reach it (don't underestimate them, though) in a place they will never be allowed, and every time you see them look mischievously at the bowl, clap your hands & distract them with a toy. That way they will learn not to jump in the forbidden area and will leave your fishy alone. When you're not watching, cover the fish, put double sided tape around the shelf, and use citrus, citronella, or perfume to repel them.

Ok. To keep your cats away from the fishbowl, do this: (i had to do this with my Tabby, and she leaves my fish alone now) Get some pepper {ya know, the kind you season food with] and sprinkle it around the fishbowl where the kittens will for sure get it on their paws. DO NOT PUT IT IN THE BOWL; IT WILL KILL THE FISH. And when they go to lick their paws, they will taste the pepper and will not go near it again. THis wil not hurt your kittens. After you've seen it's a sucess, you won't have to do it anymore; they will automatically keep their distance.

Had the same problem mine now hangs in a macrame plant hanger. All five of my cats ignore it. There are different sizes of plant hangers so you just have to find a one that is secure. Also i made sure it wouldn't pull from the ceiling by using a special umbrella hook.(was easy to install and cheap) if you do choose a lid remember that beta's have a lung and prefer to breathe air at the surface so it should be one with lots of holes.

Fish you do not extremely care about. Your hamster died from old age i'm guessing, likely numerous years old, because you cared for it nicely.? nicely with good care a goldfish can stay for 10-2 a lengthy time period, international record is 40 3 YEARS!!! In a bowl you're in a position to shop one alive for 3 hundred and sixty 5 days with very good care. The trick to holding fish alive (for years) is to furnish them with the most perfect surroundings. Fish do not evidently stay in bowls of chilly stagnant water. They stay in streams, ponds and lakes. sparkling flowing water. as a thanks to shop then healthful you want to duplicate their organic surroundings, filters to flow and sparkling the water, heaters, and water alterations to shop issues sparkling. it really is a touch miniature component to a flow or lake that you're coming up. maximum acceptable decision. purchase a 5gal hex or sq. tank, that's in common words about a foot lengthy so it wont take in a lot area. Small heater and filter out and think with reference to the perfect living house for a betta fish, per chance with a huge snail or some shrimp. Now you've an elementary care setup and a fish that ought to stay for numerous years. some thing higher and longer lived is going to wish so a lot extra room. 20-50 gal for a unmarried goldfish, in case you anticipate it to achieve old age besides. the version between a hamster and a fish is that hamsters can stay interior an same situations that we do. you in common words have a cage to stop it operating away. A fish desires a touch water ecosystem that replicates their organic surroundings. And certain I genuinely have fish that are 10 years old, yet they are like a foot lengthy and stay in a huge tank and a pond. With the right care they can outlive pets like cats and canines, or maybe small fish can outlive hamsters and mice. Ian Edit. A betta is a loner besides, they don't like organization, so dont sense undesirable about holding one on my own.

Maybe keep it in the bathroom with the door closed. When your guests need to pee, they'll see it, but the cats won't have access. I like the plant hanger idea too...there are some pretty creative people out there!

you may need to put him in a room thats off limits to kitties. its in cat's nature to hunt so they won't stop even by discipline they'll just be sneaky if punished. you can look into buying a special lid to the bowl that still lets fresh air in. you'll probably have to move it in whatever scenerio. cats are naughty lol. hope all goes well.
