about 20 chinese who i speak to, have said i'm not american because i dont' sound "AMERICAN", "you're english is not fluent". I have spanish(hispanic parents) accent but i was born in usa. And i don't like to make an New york, california or whatever accent even if i can.. i like to speak with my accent, so why these people and Even American white people or black who do use "american" accents, why do they criticize me so much and discriminate just because of this. The asians i talk to always differentiate between white americans who are supposedly "REal americans" and people like me who are according to them "immigrants living in america"..I'm fed up with them.. i thought only 1 or 5 of them would discriminate me but i talked to like 30 or more and they all say this. So , i could never be an English teacher in Japan or China right? Because i'm not considered american by them

who knows the real American accent, we speak the English language. we don't use it the way the English do. for gods sake i grew up in the northern states and yet i have a southern accent. as long as you can hold a conversation in the American version of the English language then how can any one object to it. there are more ways to screw up this language, with the different dialects and accents and whats the "right word" and "right interpretation of a meaning of a word", how can anyone really speak "American". there are too many types of Americans for our language to be universally perfect. sorry, but which American accent is the correct American accent? if you have a birth certificate (from the states) and a little knowledge of the English language, then i suppose you are as American as me and quite a few others. but i don't think they would let me teach English anywhere either. by the way do you really want to teach in those counties. also some one in our families was an immigrant at one time or another. my friend speaks polish and has a choppy accent but she is American by birth, and her parents by law. you know i am having a hard time with this question, i do not want to sound discriminate, but this is just a pile of crap, what difference does it make how you speak as long as you can communicate with the people in your neighborhood.

Why are you going to let real immigrants tell you whether your considered american or not. Its like me asking a baseball player if Im good a soccer! Anyway, Im an american, born in NC and living in DC, and I believe that accent or no accent if you were born in the US then your an american. With the diversity here in the states, and with the different accents, from southern twang to a wicked good boston accent, no one should be able to lable you. Stand up for your heritage, hispanic, but also recognize your new heritage as an american.

Appearences mean everything in this world. Having an "American Accent" is considered to be a midwestern accent. There are also southern and western and northern accents. If you have a Spanish accent, many people will not associate you with being American. It's just a fact of life. You must learn to live with it or lose your accent. It's not right, but it's the truth.

If you are American and your happy to be so, don't worry about what those people think. Don't forget what United states started as, everyone here is a imigrant, atleast by decent.
Don't let society full you into believing you have to talk or walk or dress a certain way.
Just be you, and be happy.
Hope things get better.
