The main cause of global warming is CO2 released into the atmosphere by humans from burning fossil fuels.

Humans have been releasing considerable amounts of carbon dioxide, CO2, as a result of burning fossil fuels for several hundred years now in ever increasing quantities.

As of about 1900 or so the amount of human produced CO2 started to exceed the amount released from all natural sources combined. At that point human released CO2 started to impact the global climate.

CO2 acts on the climate by very slightly reducing the amount of energy the Earth radiates into space. The earth is receiving a very considerable amount of energy from the sun all the time and if that energy is completely balanced by heat lost due to radiation into space then the overall temperature of the Earth remains stable.

If the energy balance is upset as it is now because the additional CO2 in the atmosphere has reduced the amount of energy that is lost, that extra energy has to go somewhere and where it goes is into heating everything up.

The amount of energy the Earth looses into space is controlled by it's temperature. The hotter the Earth is the faster it looses energy into space. So what will happen is that the extra energy will heat up the earth until the energy balance is restored and the amount of heat lost into space again exactly equals the amount of heat we get from the sun.

Climate models basically are computer programs written try to figure out exactly how hot the earth needs to get for the balance to be restored. There are other minor things that affect global temperatures on the short term, and here I am talking short term in the geological sense of a few hundreds or few thousands of years, but they are not major players in causing global warming over this short term period. Over longer terms of Earth's history some of these other effects have been more significant. However, CO2 levels are thought to be the primary effect that has always controlled the earth's temperature.

Edit - amey d's response below is well meaning but completely wrong. Global warming and the ozone depletion have almost nothing to do with one another. The UV light that amey mentions is absorbed and contributes to earth's temperature in both cases. In one case it is absorbed in the high atmosphere by ozone and in the other case it is absorbed by the ground. In both cases it is absorbed and contributes to total warming. There may be some very minor impact on ozone depletion by global warming but on the other hand there is virtually no impact on global warming due to ozone depletion.

i have an correct answer for ur question.

1]the vehichles and the industries release some toxic green house gases like CO2,CO,CH4....as a result the green house gases moves on to the upper atmosphere and they destroy the ozone layer in the stratosphere which protects the earth from harmful u.v rays and when the green house gases destroy ozone layer holes are created in the ozone layer and as a result the u.v rays enter the atmosphere and as a rersult increases the temperature of earth and also causes skin cancers. when temperature increases tje ice glaciere of regions like antarctica meltdown and as a result low lying areas and islands sink down and increase the level of oceans.

have u got a clear idea of global warming.

the main cause of global warming, is the actions taken by humans. humans generally poluute the envionment releasing clouds of hazordous substances such as CFC's into the enviornment . these chemicals trap sunlight in the earth. but there is also another factor known as global dimming. or the albedo affect.

the very main reason as to why there's global warming is....... our activities...... human activities..... everyday it's getting worse..... since we produce and make use of products which release or could contain CFC (Chlorofluorocarbons) which is proven to be harmful to the environment.... and the continuous release of Carbon dioxide thru burning of materials which may cause the ozone to trap the heat coming from the sun instead of bouncing it to the cosmic space....

cars (the carbon dioxide they create destroys the ozone layer, which is used to block harmful UV rays, which heat up the earth, and also they have a Greenhouse Effect, and keep the heat trapped), followed by industry... energy used by households (for heating/cooling, electronics, etc.) is also a major cause

Actually...if you look at the data, the ACTUAL data...you'd see that the trend for Avg. earth temp is a DOWNWARD trend.

the earth, as a whole, is getting colder.

which follows with THOUSANDS OF YEARS of cyclical climate changes....

its a natural occurrence...not a human one.
