Its ok to FEEL favor for the puppy. Its another thing to ignore the other dog. Dogs have the intelligence of a 3 year old. Any 3 y/o will act out if you dont give enough attention. Also, dogs are pack animals. By favoring the puppy, you are effectively pushing the older dog into the lower position. You are the Alpha. It is up to you to keep everything in order.

It is actually your head playing tricks! I have read that baby animals (and humans) have certain features that pull on the mother's heartstrings to ensure that the mother takes care of them. Everything that makes a puppy "cute" to us, like a smushed chubby face, floppy ears, wrinkles, and little puppy wimpers, etc. activates certain chemicals in our brains and makes us feel good. We can actually become sort of "addicted" to the chemical and that's probably why I have lots of pets! This also explains why humans have devoloped so many breeds with short faces and floppy ears, like pugs, shih tzus, etc. Interesting enough, the more physical "puppy characterictics" a dog breed has, the more "puppylike" the dog will act throughout it's life. With all this psycho blabble aside, you may cause some problems if you give constant attention to your puppy. When your puppy is crated (necessary for potty training) play with your 3 year old and try to keep his routine as normal as possible. You can even try taking him to a puppy sitter once in a while so you can spend quality time with your 3 year old baby! Good luck!

Hey I know how you feel, the puppy is newer and probably cuter. Just make sure and make a point of petting and caring for your other dog too. Why don't you try playing with both of them together? I know all about that, I have 4 collies, 2 puppies, the mom, and the uncle. (I show/breed collies.) I love them all! There is nothing wrong with you, you just have to make sure and give your other dog attention.

Well, if there isn't now, there probably will be. Puppies are new and cute, and fun, and it is important to spend time with them and love them. But you don't want to ignore the other one because if you do, you will have jealousy issues in the house, and that is never good. I have a dog and some puppies, and it isn't really hard to show both of them you love them. Of course my dog is the puppies mom, so that might be different. Seek out the different things in their personalities and use that. Like my dog loves toys, so I get her toys, and play fetch with her alot. My puppy loves food, so he gets my pizza crust. As your puppy turns into a dog, it will be much easier to do things the both of them like. I lost a dog, so I cherish all of my babies as much as I can. Just do small things to let them both know you care.

Puppies are always the cutest. And the puppy is like having a new toy. You always play with the new toy more than your old one.
However, you need to show equal attention to the older dog. He isn't a toy and he has feelings. If you continue to show the new pup more attention, then the older one can get jealous and start fighting with the new one.

Hey there, your 3 year old dog is still considered a puppy. But since you've had him the longest, it is natural to want to play with your newer one more, just make sure that you try to show them equal attention, or your older one may resent you for it, and won't mind you anymore & cause problems. I have a cat and dog and they get along great because I show them both equal attention...well except when my dog is eating a treat, then he'll growl at her, but that's the only time. =)

Well your mind knows that a puppy needs more attention than a three year old so it pays attention to the puppy. When your puppy grows up you'll have no problem taking care of both of them. Ask a friend or your parents to take care of the three year old so the three year old won't be left out. So you'll have time to take care of the puppy.

AHHHHHHHHH PUUPPPPPPPPY..... [says to himself: Control yourself man]
Ah ok, ive been threw this problem before, and yea you need to Show the equal amount of Affection to both dogs, until they are both satisfied, after that you can show puppy more attention... this isnt a years worth of work, this is a daily thing... such as, play with both of them at the same time, like hold puppy in your hands and pet him, and with your legs kick the ball whenever big dog wants to go catch it..!
Try different variants of them, but alwaysmake sure your giving both the same amount of affection, or else one of them wont like u anymore and get jealous and then EAT EACHOTHER, nah just messing with u, they wont eat eachother!

It's fun to have a new puppy, and they will want all of your attention, but the older dog will want and need some affection as well.
