For boxing purists Chavez was a true pugilist. He had it all where it counted the most, in the ring. He was a typical Mexican fighter in style and heart, but his skills were second to none when he was in his prime. One of the all time greats of his weight class.

Mostly I think it's because he never forgot his roots. He grew up in Culiacan and once said, "I will always live in Culiacan, because my whole life has been down there." He seemed to live a rather humble life.

But winning 5 world titles, 108 wins in 116 fights, 89 straight victories, and 27 title defense had a lot to do with it

he won so many fights i beleive he won over 80 fights! with only 2-3 defeats.
