Depression comes after the last drop. We had no conscience of the drops before that full the glass. We may try to do different things or to do things in different ways. Routine - the same thing each day - is drops for depression.

First, depression has been around since the beginning of time. In history books and novels, people are always dying of a "broken heart", not leaving their house, or jumping into rivers.

Second, whoever said this is the happiest of times? We have so much more going on around us, information overload, and many more things to stress about. Up until about 100 years ago, people didn't even have telephones, much less TV or Internet or cell phones or pagers or ...

These days, we've got 20 things going on at one time, and our brains register this as stress. Even if we're not worried about starving to death, we're worried about a hundred other things. Worrying about starving to death is a serious worry, of course, but its only ONE. We have a whole slew of things to worry about.

So, just try to live a simple life, not get to worried about things, and, if you feel like you may have depression, see a doctor.

the mind produces a chemical called serotonin, which helps the body to stay balanced. sometimes when we feel very passionate about something it offsets the balance of chemicals, such as serotonin and we feel sad or excited or mad at times when we think we shouldn't. its call a chemical imbalance. alot of drs just put you on meds without doing blood work to find out if you have an imbalance, (my pet peeve, sorry) and most of the time ppl need the medicine for a while, and some need it for a lifetime. if you have a good dr, he will do blood work 2x a year and work with you on learning new skills or recommend a therapist who will.

if you don't want to go to a dr, herbs such as siberian ginseng, licorice and st john's wort also increase the availability of serotonin in the brain. you could also join an alanon group to help with learning new skills for taking better care of yourself emotionally.

If my reading regarding low blood sugar is correct, this may explain it for you. Happiness possibly happens when the brain has sufficient blood sugar to operate optimally, however if the brain (correctly or incorrectly) senses there is too much sugar in the bloodstream, then it asks the pancreas to produce insulin, which helps remove blood sugar from the bloodstream.

If too much blood sugar is removed, the brain may reduce functioning, and one way to do that is to induce depression. As insulin is a fast acting hormone, I believe these two emotions may be able to happen nearly concurrently.
