My friends boy is almost 2 and she still breastfeeds him. He is the biggesst brat in the world and whenever he crys she just throws her tit in his mouth. Its not unhealthy....but it sure is going to make both thier lives harder when its time to stop. Who else agrees that after one year its time to stop?

And the really sad part is I swear she is doing it for herself....Breastfeeding keeps the fat off....and it sure is working for her. I don't doubt that most moms who breast feed for that long do it for thier bodies and thier own security. Ugh....creeps me out.

And no I am not "sexualizing" the breast at all. Its obvious it is not for him anymore and all for her own gratification. I am aware of mothers in third world countries nursing untill the child is around 10 but Im sure they would stop if they actually had food to feed the child.

My daughter still breastfeeds per HER choice.. not mine. And for all you "experts" out there with your opinion because you know someone or what have you, it is still VERY healthy for a toddler to breastfeed. For you men, which still has me laughing I might add, and your opinion.. chew on this one.. MICHAEL JORDAN'S mom breast fed him until he was 3!!! Which only goes to show.. breast feed a toddler and have them get the most potential.. or not.. and have them ignorantly basing their opinions on something they know NOTHING about? Thank you.. I think I will continue for as long at MY daughter wants it.. and everyone else.. you don't like it? Leave the house or don't look!

you're literally not excellent. Breastfeeding an older toddler isn't just about the maternal exhilaration, yet very regularly necessary to the toddler's actual health. for sure, for an American center classed mom with a healthful toddler breastfeeding above 18 months is frequently no longer mandatory any extra. notwithstanding, if existence's circumstances are a lot less fortunate, breastfeeding can propose be the necessary distinction between malnutrition or no longer - and that is the case each and every now and then even in u . s . a . of america. therefore the international health business organisation recommends to breastfeed for 2 years. also little ones with nutrients hypersensitive reactions should be extra constructive of being breastfed also to their in the different case constrained weightloss software.

The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for at least 2 years.
Have any of you naysayers consulted breastfeeding experts or child nutrition experts on this? ALL of them will say that the OPTIMAL situation is to breastfed your child for at least the first year, and to continue as the child and mother find appropriate, e.g. until the child outgrows his need. It is highly unusual for a one year old to be exclusively breast-fed, so the child you mention probably is eating other foods at this point.
Breastfeeding into toddlerhood is actually VERY healthy and completely the norm in most cultures around the world. It can ward off many allergies, contributes to immunities, is a strong bonding experience, and so forth. The recommended form of weaning, according to La Leche League International and nearly all experts is "don't offer, don't refuse." In other words, when a child is walking, talking, eating toddler foods, etc., if she bumps her head or can't sleep or just feels confused or whatever, and wants to nurse, let her. Cutting a nursling off cold turkey is a big no-no as far as emotional development goes.
The most common age for a child to give up the breast naturally is between 2-4 yrs old. That's not saying they suckle in public or for meals. That just happens to be about the time most kids will shrug and say "milk's all gone..." and just abandon the idea.
Y'all should really do your research before passing judgement like this. If your friend's kid is a brat, as you say, it has nothing to do with breastfeeding.
----------------------------------
Edited to add: another benefit of extended breastfeeding: greatly reduces the likelihood of obesity in the child throughout his/her entire life. and for the mom, "baby weight" is shed almost effortlessly (that's what the naturally-occurring extra fat stores are for! feeding the baby.), and helps keep weight off even after weaning. letting breastfeeding run its "natural" course (biologically, that's 2-4 yrs, as said above) has lasting effects on the mother's metabolism.
Above all, breastfeeding--even up to age 6 or whatever (that is quite rare)--is not "hella nasty," and really is the opposite of "unhealthy." And it is downright dangerous for anybody to call it "abuse." It's good for mom & baby to enjoy a healthy breastfeeding relationship for as long as it feels "right" to them.

Breastfeeding is natural so at 1 or 2 i dont think its a big deal. Personally i wouldnt go past 2. Along time ago people used to breastfeed their kids until they were 5...but now it isn't necessary so i would suggest a breast pump for your friend if she really wants to continue giving her child breast milk.

No, theres nothing wrong with it... You are sexualizing something that is just a natural function. Breastmilk contains tons of stuff unavailable elsewhere that all of these pharmaceutical companies have been trying to duplicate for ever... In most parts of the world it is not unusual for mothers to breastfeed until kids are 2-3 years old. You just have some kind of wierd hangup. Get over it.

Nope it is not weird or gross to breast feed for that long. I breast fed my son until he was 2 1/2 years old. He is a very happy and healthy little boy. He has never gotten sick or has had the flu. He has great teeth. He weaned off of me 1 month before I found out I was pregnant again. I will breast feed this baby until he/she is ready to wean them selves.
I think your friend is doing a wonderful thing for her child.

My child is almost two and is nursing at this very moment. its definitely not for my benefit. Its very healthy and nothing wrong or sick about it. Most children will self-wean between 2.5 and age 7.
We live in a sick society where the feeding and comfort of a child is considered wrong. And it is considered okay to give a child milk from another species. Anybody ever see a smart cow?
You should mind your own business and leave your friend's parenting decisions up to her and her alone.

Breastfeeding after one year is NORMAL. The AAP recommends nursing until AT LEAST 1 year and then continuing to nurse "as long as mutually desired" after that. WHO recommends at least 2 years. The AAFP says nursing a toddler is normal too.
Your friend is doing what is best for her AND what is best for her child. Get over your own hang-ups about it and leave her and her child alone.
Even after one year, breastfeeding still provides benefits to BOTH mother and child. If her child was ready to stop nursing, then he would stop and she couldn't make him continue. Obviously, it is something that is still working for both of them. Continuing to respond to her child's needs is making their lives easier, not harder.
BTW...for those who say there is no health benefit after 12 mos...what do you think happens? Does it turn to Kool Aid at 12 months? Of course there are still health, immunological and nutritive benefits, etc. to breastfeeding as long as it's happening. That's like saying there's no benefit to eating ONE SINGLE apple. It may only be ONE apple, but it's also ONE part of a complete diet.
My son weaned when he was 3.5 years old. My older daughter was almost 2 years old. My youngest daughter is 3.5 years old and still nursing.

If they can climb on your lap and unbutton your shirt themselves, they are too old!!! Bonding is one thing but this sounds like something that would cause serious harm after a while and while weight loss and birth control are both advantages of breastfeeding, you have to think about the child more than yourself.

I TOTALLY agree!!! There is actually NO health benefit past 1 year of age!!! My friends mom breastfed her daughter until she was 3 1/2!!!!! DISGUSTING!!! I completely support breastfeeding, I breastfed my son for almost a year...but I think breastfeeding past 18 months is completely disgusting!! And I also agree with you that when people do it for longer than that, they are definitly doing it for themselves, because they dont want to let go and let their "babies" grow up at all!! Its gross, your right!! She should definitly stop!!!
