Hey Libby- I know it will sound trite for me to say that there is no best approach to anything in life other than what makes you most comfortable. I've tried other approaches, and they've all failed miserably! For example, when I was younger, I worked in a cutthroat type of business where people were cheating me left and right. So, on many a day, I would go in to work angry with the preconceived notion that I was going to approach the business like I was J.R. Ewing (of Dallas Fame); kicking *** (butt) and taking names later! Yes, I would lie, and cheat them the same way they had done it to me! But as you could imagine, even with the "tough guy" name "Brucie" (Bruce), I was never able to conjure up that particular "approach".
I have a similar situation to you. I have Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which is classified as a Parkinson's Plus disorder. I try to figure out who I should be now, and, again, not meaning to sound trite, I can't seem to get away from "Myself"; all too often complaintive and whiny but, always struggling to maintain a positive approach!
I have this feeling that being "Yourself" will be the most pleasing and comfortable to you and those who love you.
And besides, our dream to suddenly develop a daredevil, "come what may" approach to life like, let's say...........Evel Knievel.........would hardly fit our current circumstances!!!

A day at a time, sometimes a minute at a time. Write a gratitude list. Put everything on there from your breathing to you own shoes or a roof.. Read the Bible Philippians is a good place to go. Even you've never read it believe it or not,,, it helps.. Try and help someone else out in some way.. The best way is to try and stay other centered instead of self centered, Its really hard to do when your sick. Be Happy for the moment... and then the day..

Never be resentful, have a positive outlook; never complain too much about the aches and pains except to the health professionals as friends tend to not want to hear the bad stuff all the time; do as much as possible for as long as you can; and try to work in a support group to mentor others who are just discovering that they are ill and incurable and help them over the bumps that you have already experienced.

When you're feeling low, do some of your favourite things, travel and see the world if you can, just be...

Everyone has an incurable progressively debilitating illness (age),and none of us know how long we will live or the precise nature of our death. It is always best to do the best each day. Plan as if you will live forever. Live as if today is your last.

Laugh at it! (I do. It really helps.)

Complain about it! (I do. At my age, complaining is about the only truly satisfying thing I can still do well!)

Pay attention to medical advice. (I do. Sometimes they come up with a little help.)
