What is Mitral Valve Prolapse? What is the mitral valve?
The mitral valve controls the flow of blood between 2 chambers (or "rooms") of your heart, called the left atrium and the left ventricle. Normally, blood flows only from the atrium to the ventricle. When the heart relaxes in between beats, the 2 flaps of the mitral valve swing open to let blood flow from the atrium to the ventricle. The flaps normally open only one way. (See the pictures below.)

What is mitral valve prolapse?
If you have mitral valve prolapse, the flaps of the valve don't work well. One of the flaps moves back into the atrium when the heart beats. This can let blood flow from the ventricle back into the atrium.

About 1 in 20 Americans has mitral valve prolapse. People are usually born with it. More women have it than men.

It's actually "mitral valve prolapse" and it's a heart defect in which one of the valves in the heart becomes sort of "floppy." Usually there are no symptoms, but sometimes this can cause a heart murmur. Other symptoms might be fatigue, chest pain, anxiety, palpitations, headaches, etc. MVP is the most common heart valve abnormality there is, affecting 5-10% of the world's population. Treatment can involve dietary changes, exercise, and sometimes medication.

Mitral Valve prolapse
The valve between top and bottom chmber of lft side of heart is too long for the chamber so it bulges back in the top chamber when bottom chamber pumps blood...usually harmless but if you have murmur, you should thake antibiotics before oral colonic or urinary surgical procedures...Doctors know what antibiotic to give!
